A flurry of trades at the deadline changed the outlook for a number of teams and in turn how we wager MLB parlays. Those new acquisitions should all be settled into their new digs for the slate of games on Saturday, August 3, making things more interesting for final two months. It will take time to determine winners and losers from the deadline deals, but the New York Yankees experienced immediate benefits from the acquisition of Jazz Chisholm. In his first four games with his new club Chisholm had seven hits, four of which were home runs, and the Yanks scored 35 runs in those games winning them all. After a successful road trip the Bombers return home to start the betting day with an AL East matchup against Toronto in one of six divisional contests on the schedule.

I sucked again on last week’s three-team parlay backing the Dodgers in their loss to Houston and the UNDER in the Mariners-White Sox game. You can’t be as horrible offensively as the M’s for an entire season and they busted out in a big way. Since getting swept by the Angels and scoring one run each of the three games, Seattle averaged nearly eight runs cashing the OVER in five straight. The Phils are struggling but they did beat Cleveland, 8-0, for the only win on my card.
There’s still time to break out of this slump and if the Yankees and Mariners can do it so can I. And speaking of the Yankees their new-found offense energized by Chisholm takes on a shaky Blue Jays squad. Toronto pitchers just surrendered 31 runs in a four-game series against the O’s and I’m not sure things are getting better. In winning five in a row the Yankees averaged more than nine runs scoring at least six in each outing. This one has OVER written all OVER it.
Betting against two of the worst teams in MLB on the moneyline doesn’t have a lot of value. So I’m backing Minnesota in its game against the White Sox and San Diego against Colorado to cover the spread. It’s always good to move the odds in your favor. The White Sox are on pace for the worst record in modern MLB history and their road losing percentage is around 81.5. And they’ve been outscored by more than 220 runs. The Padres might be the hottest team in MLB post All-Star break winning eight of 10 following Tuesday’s 6-5 comeback win over the Dodgers. Their pitching has been solid and the offense continues to rake with the best average in the bigs.

I went against the Yankees in last week’s same game parlay and that happened to be the time they broke out of their slump. They beat Boston 11-8 and won their next four on the road trip. I did successfully back the OVER, but it didn’t mean squad since the Sox failed me. I really like the Orioles and hope things work out for them this season, but I was confused by their deadline activity. They didn’t need much but went for volume adding several new faces to the clubhouse. That could have an impact on team chemistry and is tough for players to swallow when not playing well. They did win four of five games following Wednesday’s victory over Toronto, but the Jays aren’t the Guardians and the O’s are on the road against one of the best home teams. I’m backing the team formerly known as the Indians.
