The Houston Astros are among the hottest teams winning 15 of 19 games after Wednesday’s 9-1 thrashing of Miami. The Astros host AL West rival and defending champion Texas as they look to close the gap on Seattle in the division.

I’ve been confident in my three-team MLB parlay picks the last few times but they haven’t come through for me. The frustration continued with another L last week when two of my bets failed. It’s tough when you lose backing the UNDER in a Mariners game. Seattle beat Toronto 5-4 going OVER the total by half a run so it didn’t matter that the Mets covered the spread in their 5-2 win against Pittsburgh.
It’s back to the drawing board as I look to end my slump and head into the All-Star break with a winner. You expect the Yankees to break out of their slump some time. It’s been an awful few months and they haven’t had much success against Baltimore. The O’s have won five of seven encounters this season and took three of four in Baltimore. I have to back the home team straight up in this game.
With the Royals and Red Sox battling for the final wild card spot this game takes on more meaning. KC is a pleasant surprise this season and it’s still too early to start feeling the pressure of a playoff race. They have the fourth-best run differential in the AL and enter the series having won three straight by a combined score of 24-10.
Nobody is running away with the AL West but teams are running from it. It’s been a good month for Houston climbing back into contention by going 15-4 since the middle of June carried by an offense that’s been raking behind Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez. The Astros lead MLB in batting and rank among the top 10 in several pertinent categories. And the teams cashed the OVER in five of seven games, which is good enough for me to bet that way.

I missed my same game parlay last week when I backed Kansas City in its loss to Colorado. The teams played UNDER the total so I didn’t feel too bad, but I still lost. I’m going back to a team that’s done well for me in parlays and at the time of this writing owns the best record in baseball. The Phillies are the first to win 60 games after taking the first two from the Dodgers and they have the best run differential at +119. Playing at home against one of the worst teams the Phils will be a huge favorite on the moneyline, so to shift the odds in my favor I’m backing them to cover the spread. And one of the best offenses could put up big numbers against an erratic A’s pitching staff.
