With a little over three weeks remaining in the 2024 MLB regular season time is quickly expiring on our opportunities to win MLB parlays. Not that long ago we had a number of teams contending for a wild card spot in each league, but we’ve seen some separation with just a few teams clinging to postseason aspirations. Two of the hottest teams in baseball entering the weekend have narrowed the gap in the NL with the surging Mets closing in on a wild card spot by extending their winning streak to seven games with a sweep of the Red Sox. It might be too late for the Cubs but winning 10 of 13 games at least has the faithful thinking the postseason is a possibility. Both teams are at home on Saturday, September 7 with the Cubs hosting the Yankees and the Mets entertaining Cincinnati.

Once again I came oh so close to hitting a three-team MLB parlay only to have Cleveland’s offense take the day off in a 3-0 setback to Pittsburgh last Saturday. The Guardians scored 10 runs on Friday and six runs on Sunday, but they were held to just two hits by four Buccos’ hurlers on Saturday. I did hit on my other picks with the Mets covering the spread in their 5-3 win over the White Sox and Philadelphia beating Atlanta outright, 3-0. It only takes one, though, and I had it.
After a slump that saw the Phils lose their grip on the best record in the NL and the pitching staff surrender a bunch of runs, it appears as though they’ve righted the ship. Philly enters the series with Miami having won four straight and nine of 11. They are just 5-4 against the Marlins this season but with the Fish eliminated from the playoff picture and the Phils chasing down the best record in the NL, this is a game they must have. And they must cover the runline, which they’ll do.
Winning the AL Central may no longer be an option, but the Twins and Royals are holding down the last two wild card spots and they tangle in a huge weekend series. The teams have struggled recently blowing their chances of a division title. The Royals tied Cleveland for first over a week ago then proceeded to lose seven in a row. In a game they absolutely had to win they beat the Guardians on Wednesday ending their skid. They are one of the best home teams in MLB and they will take down the scuffling Twins.
With Fernando Tatis Jr. back in the lineup after missing a few months, the Padres have a deeper lineup adding to the one that has MLB’s best batting average. San Diego has been among the best since the All-Star break and catching the Dodgers isn’t out of the question. However, beating a sub-.500 Giants club is necessary to maintain their wild card standing and the Pads have been pulling out wins during their run of success.

I hit last week’s same game parlay with the Dodgers beating Arizona, 8-6, and going OVER the total. Some of my best work has come in this section and I’ll look to keep it going with a team that’s been one of my favorites to bet against. When the White Sox lose they usually do it big with a -303 run differential, nearly 100 runs more than the next worse team. Boston will be looking to take out some frustration after their postseason hopes were put on life support following a three-game sweep by the Mets. Boston is still in the wild card race and they need wins over Chicago to keep pressure on the teams ahead of them.
