Baseball is here, and there is serious buzz surrounding the new season as some long overdue rule changes are shortening games. Most games have lasted less than three hours, even though scoring is up across the league. That’s a great combination as baseball looks to connect with a new generation of fans, and that should lead to a lot more baseball betting this summer than we have seen in the recent past.
Given the new rule changes, aces seem likely to be even more dominant, and that’s going to be one of my key betting strategies at the start of the 2023 MLB season.

Tampa Bay Rays at Washington Nationals
Baltimore Orioles at Texas Rangers
The Tampa Bay Rays are off to a great start this season. Tampa Bay is taking advantage of a soft schedule in early April, and the Rays are 4-0 as of Tuesday morning. They swept the Detroit Tigers in the Bay Area to start the season, outscoring Detroit 21-3 in the process, and they cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.
Washington is still in the middle of a rebuild after a huge fire sale last season. The Nationals have a bunch of unproven hitters, and one of the worst starters in the majors is expected to come to the mound on Wednesday afternoon. Patrick Corbin went 6-19 as a starter last year with a 6.31 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. He has completely fallen apart as a pitcher over the past few seasons, and he was lit up in his season opening start against Atlanta on Thursday. Corbin allowed seven hits and three walks in just three innings, as the Braves cruised to a 7-2 win.
Shane McLanahan will be stepping to the mound for Tampa Bay, and he has emerged as the Rays’ next ace. McLanahan was sharp in his first start of the season with six strikeouts and five baserunners allowed over six innings as the Rays shut out Detroit. Washington will be hard pressed to make contact against McLanahan or the bullpen.
It was a disappointing debut for Jacob deGrom after he signed a five-year deal worth $185 million with the Texas Rangers this offseason. The two-time Cy Young Award winner was rocked by the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing six hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings. That wasn’t the start either Texas or deGrom wanted, but he also struck out seven in the outing, so he still has his stuff.
We should see deGrom bounce back against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Baltimore had a surprising season last year and has some solid bats, but deGrom is a next level pitcher that got unlucky in the season opener. The Orioles do not have a good rotation with Kyle Gibson as their No. 1 arm, so the Rangers bats should tee off and give deGrom some run support too.
