A number of games featuring teams in playoff contention dot the MLB schedule for Wednesday, August 14. That isn’t saying much since plenty of teams are still within striking distance. Entering the week eight teams are 10 or more games behind in the wild card standings making it unlikely for them to qualify for the postseason. Those could be teams worth targeting when it comes time to build a winning MLB parlay. Or you could play the hot hand. San Diego and Arizona have been the best teams in MLB since the All-Star break with the Dbacks hosting Colorado and San Diego entertaining Pittsburgh.

For the first time I won a game on the runline when backing the underdog. A day after ending their 21-game losing streak the White Sox fell to Oakland, 3-2, but covered the spread. I also successfully backed UNDER 7.5 in the game between St. Louis and Tampa Bay won by the Cards 3-2. My three-team MLB parlay was foiled by Cleveland, who lost at home putting a dent in their stellar Jacobs Field ledger. And that’s what I mean by backing the hot team. That was Arizona’s eighth win in nine games.
I don’t play the total as much as I probably should and I’ve never had two picks on the combined number of runs, until this week. Arizona’s recent surge has been fueled by offense putting back to back games with double figure run totals against the Phillies. If they can do that against a good Phils staff they should light up Colorado’s hurlers. They did when the teams met earlier this season in the desert scoring 32 runs while cashing the OVER in three of four games. I’ll back the OVER with a hot club.
I’ve had success backing the UNDER in Seattle games and I’m sticking to it for their matchup with Detroit. The M’s play below the total in more than 55 percent of their games, the third-best ratio in MLB, and have they’ve been dealing lately blanking the Mets in consecutive games after cashing the UNDER in two of three against the Tigers.
Lastly, the Mets will be happy to get back home after a 10-game road trip and will take out some of their frustrations on the A’s. Oakland has the second worst road record in the AL while the Mets need to win games like this to stay in wild card contention in the NL. So, I’m backing the home team on the moneyline for one of my MLB parlay picks.

I need to make better decisions on my same game parlay so I’m going back to an old reliable. Earlier in the year the White Sox got me a few times, but my fortunes have changed recently. Going against the Sox was beneficial during that record tying losing streak, but the moneyline is a lost wager with no value. So, instead I’m backing the Yankees on the runline and betting that their offense will do enough damage to cash the OVER. And keeping opponents from scoring has been a struggle for the Yanks, who allowed 16 runs in the final two games of their series with the Rangers. The Yanks total 17 runs in three-game sweep of the Sox back in May covering the spread in every game.
