The last day in July signals the beginning of the dog days of the 2024 MLB season. However, with the expanded playoff format a number of teams are still in contention. And July 31 is the first day after the trade deadline with teams looking to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. One team in need of a jolt is the New York Yankees, who have stumbled over the last six weeks with one of the worst records in baseball. Their once strong pitching got shredded for 29 runs during a three-game stretch prior to Sunday’s showdown in Boston. The Bombers close a three-game set against MLB leading Philadelphia. San Diego’s recent 7-game winning streak put some pressure on the Dodgers in the NL West. Those teams wrap up a brief two-game series on Wednesday.

Just like a hitter who goes 0 for 5 with four strikeouts in a game, you have to have a short memory when playing MLB parlays and put the disasters behind you. It seems like I’ve been doing that a lot lately and especially after last week’s loser. I did back the Astros against the spread in their 8-1 win over Oakland, but Seattle and Baltimore both lost as moneyline favorites. So, it’s on to another week where I’ll try and get back to the winner’s circle.
Given the Yankees sudden inability to prevent opponents from scoring backing the OVER in their matchup with the Phillies looks like a solid wager as part of my three-team MLB parlay. The Phils haven’t been exactly tearing it up lately but they do have the best home record and run differential in MLB. They rank in the top 5 in runs per game and batting average and the Yanks added sparkplug Jazz Chisholm to a lineup that features Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. Offense is in.
The White Sox caved at the deadline and the lineup on Wednesday is a big unknown. The Royals, meanwhile, are in the thick of the wild card race and can’t afford to lose games against the Sox. Just about two weeks ago KC swept a three-game series outscoring the Sox 17-3 and the Royals won nine of 10 meetings heading into this series. Even on the road I’ll back KC against the spread.
As long as Paul Skenes isn’t on the bump I’ll back Houston in its game against Pittsburgh. A recent surge has the Astros back atop the AL West standings and with ace Framber Valdez the likely starter, it makes sense to back the home team against a Pirates squad that ranks in the bottom third in several key offensive categories.

To use a baseball line I struck out in last week’s same game parlay. Backing the Yankees and the UNDER in their Subway Series matchup with the Mets was a poor choice since the Yanks are still struggling. I thought they’d bust out but a 12-3 loss proved otherwise. I think it’s time for the Orioles to end their recent slump. The O’s dropped 10 of 14 games before beating San Diego, 8-6, on Sunday. And the Blue Jays have been a mess all season with lofty expectations quickly dashed. Baltimore upgraded its roster at the deadline setting them up for a strong finish. To stay ahead of the Yankees in the AL East beating up on the last place team is necessary. And the O’s entered the series cashing the OVER in six straight games and in nine of their last 10.
