The top two teams in the NL West square off on Sunday Night Baseball when the San Diego Padres visit the Los Angeles Dodgers in a SoCal showdown. There isn’t much drama as to who will win the division with the Dodgers taking a significant lead over their neighbors from the south. LA reached the 90-win mark earlier in the week before any other team even has 84, so they are well ahead of the curve. And a big reason for the Dodgers success is their mistreatment of San Diego. LA won eight of the first 10 games this season and captured 17 of the previous 19 meetings after finishing 2021 with nine straight victories.
The NL West matchup between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers is set for 7:08 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 4, 2022. The game will air live on ESPN from Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. BookMaker.eu will have betting options for every game of the MLB season.

Odds Analysis
You have to wonder what the Padres need to do in order to beat LA. They made a deal for some big bats at the trade deadline acquiring Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury. While the trio has been good the Pads struggled a bit right after the deals. Loaded with confidence and a new look lineup, they went to LA a few days after deadline and had their asses handed to them getting swept and outscored 20-4 in three games.
Though San Diego moved 13 games over .500 at 72-59 with a pair of wins in San Francisco, they still have a losing record since the deadline. Winning twice in KC and taking two from the Giants gave them four wins in five games but still left them at 12-13 since adding those three. It’s not easy remaking a lineup more than halfway through the season and expecting immediately results. One player could make a seamless transition, but San Diego’s new trio has been a big part of the team. They could be coming together if the first part of this road trip is any indication. The Pads averaged 6.8 runs winning four of the first five games on the trip and also got three one-run wins.
When you have the highest scoring offense and the best team ERA in the majors you’re going to win a lot of games. That’s what the Dodgers have and that’s exactly what they’ve done. Winning during the regular season is commonplace for LA, which is all but guaranteed another 100-win campaign, which would be their third straight in a full season of baseball. They didn’t reach triple digits in 2020 since the season was shortened to 60 games, but they won nearly 72 percent of their games that season and were on pace for 116 wins over a full schedule.
The season hasn’t been without turmoil making their accomplishments stand out even more. They’ve had numerous injuries to the pitching staff and still haven’t gotten the expected offensive production from Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger. That they won 90 of their first 128 games shows the depth of the organization. Though they’ve been heavily favored in a majority of their games, the Dodgers have won a lot of money for backers up over $1100 on the moneyline for the year.
Probable Pitchers
The Padres give the ball to Mike Clevinger (5-5, 3.59 ERA) to try and snap their funk against the Dodgers. Clevinger had a chance last month at Dodger Stadium but instead had his worst outing of the season. The Dodgers can do that to opposing pitchers. Clevinger lasted just 4.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits, including a pair of homers, in the 8-3 loss. He’s been consistent if not great in his first full year after Tommy John surgery. He’s been consistent allowing two earned runs or less in 12 of his 17 starts giving the Padres a chance to go 11-6 in his outings. If you take that game against LA out of the equation, Clevinger has been exceptional since mid-July with a 2.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.
If Andrew Heaney (2-1, 2.12 ERA) gets the nod for LA, which is expected since his spot in the rotation is up, we’ll have a rematch of the Aug. 6 game won by the Dodgers 8-3. Heaney had an early lead but surrendered three unearned runs before exiting after 4.2 innings getting a ND when his mates rallied. After more than a month on IL, Heaney returned at the end of July tossing four shutout innings against Washington. He’s pitched to a 2.87 ERA in his last seven starts but has gone more than five innings just once. He’s had the benefit of solid run support with the Dodgers scoring at least seven runs in five of his last seven starts winning six of those games.
Padres at Dodgers MLB Odds Pick
The Dodgers are good, but manhandling a decent San Diego club as easily as they have is one of those things that make you say hmmm. With a few weeks of coming together with new players and in the thick of a wild card playoff race, the Padres will play at an intense level, and they need to beat LA for their mental well being.
