Odds Analysis

It’s been a bumpy road for the Giants, who have been unable to get any traction this season. Injuries have played a role, but the biggest issue is that they just aren’t as good as their 107-wins from last season indicate. They were set up for failure after the successful 2021 campaign and the Giants haven’t disappointed. They were seven games over .500 and five games back in the NL West standings in late June only to go 21-28 over the next 49 games.

And when it looks like they’re ready to go on a run they regress. Four times in that 49-game span the Giants had losing streaks of at least four games stalling any momentum. It also left them as one of the least profitable teams in MLB down $1361 on the moneyline. Opening their current road trip with a pair of losses in Colorado, they rebounded by winning the next two to even their record at 61-61. To put that in perspective, if the Giants won all of their remaining 40 games they’d still finish with fewer wins than they had last season.

While the Twins are just a few games better in the overall standings, they’re in a much better position in the AL Central. That happens when there’s no dominant team in the division. The Twins don’t have worry about a team like the Dodgers instead its Cleveland they’re trying to track down. And one streak, good or bad, can make a big difference in the standings.

Facing the Rangers with a chance to improve their standing the Twins lost the last three of a four-game set and dropped the opener to Houston on Tuesday picking a bad time to endure their longest losing streak of the season. That tells us a lot about the Twins being a handful of games over .500 without losing a bunch of them in a row. Consistency is good, but they need to string wins together if they hope to track down Cleveland.

Probable Pitchers

The Giants boasted one of the best pitching staffs in baseball last season allowing them to win a record number of games. Alex Cobb (4-6, 3.99 ERA) wasn’t a part of that unit being acquired to replace a few arms that departed, and for the most part he’s been decent in his first stint with a NL club. He’s been able to keep the Giants in games allowing three earned runs or less in 17 of his 20 starts, but even that hasn’t been enough. The Giants won only one of his last six starts despite his 3.79 ERA over that span. He’s been a boon for under bettors cashing the UNDER in nine of his previous 12 starts. Spending his first 10 seasons in the AL has given Cobb a history with Minnesota. He’s 3-3 with a 5.68 ERA in eight career starts and he’s been victimized by the long ball surrendering 10 home runs in 38 innings.

While the Twins haven’t officially named a starter, Sonny Gray (7-4, 3.10 ERA) is in line to get the nod. The veteran righty has been everything the Twins needed when acquiring him in the offseason solidifying the rotation. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in 14 of his 19 starts with a 1.12 WHIP. He’s been efficient over his last six starts going 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA over 32.2 innings. Another thing Gray does well is limit big innings. He’s issued only 28 walks and nine home runs. The pen has cratered in many of his starts allowing the Twins to cash the OVER in nine of his past 11 outings.

Giants at Twins MLB Odds Pick

On paper we have a good pitching matchup, but the bullpen has been an issue for both teams. Don’t expect the starters to go beyond six innings leaving us time to score runs and cash the OVER, and I’m counting on the teams to do that.
