Trump Repeatedly Fumbled in Red Zone

U.S. Presidential News for Wednesday, September 11, 2024

Presidential Election Betting: Tuesday night’s debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris was a difficult watch for anyone who is not a Democrat. The ABC moderators resembled football officials in the tank, repeatedly flagging Trump for anything and everything while letting Harris skate with zero fact-checks on her numerous lies. Still, there were opportunities for Trump to score points. Instead, he squandered those chances with self-inflicted errors. Trump wasted too much time on pettiness, such as the size of his crowds or whether they left his events early. He took the bait on Haitian illegal immigrants eating the pets of Ohio residents who President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris evilly dumped into a small Ohio town. Trump wasted too many opportunities to make the obvious points on a weak economy and the lack of border security. It also didn’t help that Harris looked much younger and more attractive, although her constant smirking and snide facial expressions were a turnoff to millions of viewers.

Kamala Harris “won” the debate despite being as vague as ever about her specific policies, her attempts to dodge whether Americans are better off than they were four years ago, and her blatant lying that the low-information voters she is depending on will ever find out about her deceit. The biggest question is whether Tuesday’s debate will matter. The best news for Trump is that there are almost two months until election day, and Americans are notorious for having memories of goldfish.

Trump’s Best Moment Was His Close

Donald Trump did score at the end of the debate when, during his closing statement, he asked why Kamala Harris failed to get any of her promises passed over the past 3.5 years. He made it clear that most Americans are not better off than they were under a Trump presidency. The problem is that, with his concluding statement, it was too little, too late, and likely with a smaller audience than what the debate opened with.

For all her smugness and lies, Harris seemed nervous whenever the topics concerned the economy and border security. Again, the problem is low-information voters who won’t notice or care.

Is It Still the Economy Stupid?

Bill Clinton’s campaign manager in 1992, James Carville, had a big sign in the campaign war room that said, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Carville was right, as was former President Gerald Ford, who said that Americans vote their pocketbooks. In the America of yesteryear, those were iron-clad facts.

Today, voters have their eyes pop out at the checkout lines, gas pumps, or when opening their bills. Inflation has made purchasing a home out of reach for too many voters. Add in a mass invasion of illegal immigrants, and you would think this is a Republican year. But it is not.

The great irony of Donald Trump is that his win in 2016 was made possible by his unconventional style. At that time, his ways were an asset. Now, they are a liability. Suffering American voters are looking for a reason to reject Harris. Instead, Trump wasted too much of their time.

It is too early to tell if Harris clinched the presidency on Tuesday night. But she did achieve a level of credibility that she did not have until the debate.

Trump supporters can correctly scream about the rigged moderators. But Trump deserves the bulk of the blame for a bad night. Once again, his ego and hubris were his Achilles heel.
