Trump Runs Counter Left Play

U.S. Presidential News for Wednesday, July 31, 2024

Presidential Election Betting: As presumptive Democrat nominee Kamala Harris has tried to backtrack from her extremist left positions on almost every issue, Donald Trump is using Richard Nixon’s old playbook to isolate Harris on the fringe of where most voters are.

Like Trump, Nixon had a reputation for being a gaslighting right-wing conservative. But the reality was much more complex. Nixon would talk the language of what he described as the “Silent Majority” of “forgotten Americans” while running a centrist administration. Nixon got away with doing that because of his strong anti-Communist credentials. When Nixon went to Communist China in 1972, it was said, “Only Nixon could go to China.”

Like Nixon, Trump is trying to hog the center of the electorate to himself. But will it work?

A Calculated Risk

The Late Rush Limbaugh said that only Trump could cause his supporters to stop supporting him. In this case, Trump is betting that he can make a sharp pivot to the center and hold his base while picking up some independents and suburban voters who abandoned him in 2020 after supporting him in his 2016 upset win.

While much is made of potential Trump gains with black voters, especially men, the reality is that if Trump focuses on the suburbs, there are millions more votes to gain. However, this strategy carries the risk of Trump making a foolhardy bet.

Affluent suburban white women and their compliant, emasculated husbands grew tired of Trump in his first presidency and fell for Biden’s fraudulence of being a moderate. Instead, Biden made Trump look good in comparison because of the current president’s extreme left policies that Harris vociferously supported to the hilt.

But Trump’s rough edges remain a problem for affluent voters who may not feel the same financial pain and pinch at the pump, check out lines, or with their mortgage and insurance payments. The affluent have the luxury of being able to afford “good manners,” and that is where Trump may encounter problems with his strategy.

Meanwhile, the pro-Trump media is becoming more annoyed by the hour, and with good reason. His campaign manager, Chris LaCivita, comes from the Bush wing of the Republican Party and has never been quoted as a Trump supporter.

Project 25 Leader Steps Down

Paul Dans, director of the controversial Project 25, stepped down this week. Project 25 was an independent plan for a new Republican president to implement with several strong ideas about getting control of an arrogant bureaucracy that has served as a dictatorship and fiefdom, consistently governing against the will of the people—Project 25 aimed to shut down government agencies and streamline them.

While much of Project 25 was good, there was controversy over its aims regarding abortion and contraception. When Roe vs. Wade was struck down by the Supreme Court two years ago, it triggered women of all backgrounds into becoming unhinged and deranged over abortion and reproductive issues. As a result, the 2022 off-year elections, which were expected to be a bloodbath of Democrat losses, turned into a standoff.

Trump has pivoted on abortion, attempting to make it a state’s rights issue. He went out of his way to say that Project 25 was “too conservative” and accused the Heritage Foundation, which is tied to Project 25, of trying to piggyback off of his candidacy. These comments were another effort by Trump to come off as a centrist and appeal to women.
