Barcelona and Real Madrid have ruled over La Liga for the last two decades. Every other club in Spain’s resources pale in comparison to these two juggernauts, and both sides have become significantly better this offseason. The Blaugrana spent $290 million on new players, while Real Madrid doled out nearly $350 million and might spend more after an underwhelming 2018-19 season. These two clubs have won 14 of the last 15 titles and are heavy favorites per the La Liga betting odds to win again this season.

Let’s start with the reigning champions. Barcelona have won four of the last five La Liga titles and eight of the last eleven as well. Lionel Messi has been the catalyst, winning the Golden Boot in each of the last three seasons and he was magnificent in league play last year. His 36 goals were 15 more than any other player tallied, and his 13 assists were tied for the league lead.
Barca are even better now. The Blaugrana finally added Antoine Griezmann after more than a year of flirtation between the two sides, and Frenkie de Jong will give the club a playmaker in the mold of Andres Iniesta. The only real concern is in the middle of the defense as Gerard Pique might finally be showing his age.
In the aftermath of a disappointing 2018-19 season that saw Real Madrid win no trophies, Los Blancos cleaned house. The club dealt a number of players to make room for new signings, clearing the way for five players that all commanded transfer fees of $50 million or more.
Eden Hazard was the big name to come over. Hazard will immediately add some sizzle to a team that lacked a playmaker outside of Luka Modric, and the two will look to create chemistry immediately. Luka Jovic is a young star that should start from the opener with Karim Benzema getting older and Gareth Bale not in the good graces of Zinedine Zidane.
Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, and Rodrygo were also added by Real Madrid, and the trio will give this back line incredible depth.
The other capital club lost a ton of players this offseason. Griezmann left for Barcelona and Lucas Hernandez, Rodri, and Gelson Martins all commanded high fees from other teams in the transfer market.
Rather than just pocket the money, ownership decided to reinvest in a big way. Atletico dished out the most money of any club on just one player this offseason by spending more than $140 million to nab Joao Felix from Benfica. Felix impressed in the preseason and he will take Griezmann’s former role up top in Diego Simeone’s defense-first system.
It will be tough for any other club to crack into the top three. Valencia claimed the other Champions League spot last season, but they finished well behind those three clubs. Their only big acquisition was acquiring Barcelona’s backup goalkeeper Jesper Cillessen to be their starter, so the Bats will count on Goncalo Guedes and others to make significant strides.
Sevilla had another tumultuous offseason. After topping the table through two months, they plummeted and only barely held on to qualify for the Europa League. They did make some nice moves this offseason though, adding plenty of quality talent at reasonable prices and will count on Julen Lopetegui to put it all together.
Getafe were the most surprising club last season, finishing fifth in the table, but the small club did not do much over the summer. Even qualifying for European competition again would be a success, and they have no real chance of winning La Liga.
