Last weekend was a week for the home teams in La Liga. Home teams were a combined 5-4-1 with the one loss being Girona’s defeat at the hands of Villarreal. Girona have been the worst team in the league at home this season with a 2-6-9 record in 17 matches, so that was pretty much expected. There were some surprising results for home teams that shook up the table though, and that will make matches interesting this weekend.

Deportivo Alaves +107
Real Valladolid +289

Alaves continues to bottom out and a team with Champions League dreams just a month ago no longer seems likely to even qualify for Europa League. They are winless in their last four matches, but they should be able to pick up a win over relegation-threatened Real Valladolid this weekend. Valladolid have just 31 points, and they have been held winless in their last four matches too.

Celta Vigo are looking to put some distance between themselves and the drop this week, and they will be taking on a Girona team on a four-match losing streak. Celta Vigo are just one point ahead of Valladolid coming into this weekend.
Eibar have been one of the better home teams in Spain this season, so they aren’t big underdogs against an Atletico Madrid team that is currently second in the standings. Diego Costa is currently facing a six-match suspension for insulting a referee’s mother two weeks ago, and that leaves Atletico without its second-best forward.
Three points would be huge for either Rayo Vallecano or Huesca. The two teams are at the bottom of the league table, but neither one has given up hope of staying afloat yet, and a win would rejuvenate either team’s chances. Huesca have three straight draws to their credit, although last week’s tie with Barcelona was largely helped by the fact that Barca played mostly raw, inexperienced players.
Speaking of Barcelona, they might rest some of their starters again this weekend after a midweek Champions League clash with Manchester United. They are nine points ahead in the table with six matches to play, so they do have breathing room.

The match between Getafe and Sevilla is pivotal in the race to grab the last Champions League spot in Spain. Sevilla leapfrogged Getafe this last weekend, and they are now one point ahead of the smaller club after winning five of their last six matches. Getafe are playing at home though, and Sevilla have struggled on the road.
Real Madrid should not be this large of a favorite this week against a surging Athletic Bilbao side. They had to settle for a draw against Leganes on Monday, and Bilbao have been playing very well. This is an underrated rivalry, and the Basque clubs loves to tweak the nose of Madrid when possible.
A big win over Girona last week may have saved Villarreal’s season. The Yellow Submarine suffered a disappointing loss to Valencia in their Europa League clash, but they climbed out of the relegation zone by nipping Girona. That was long-due considering Villarreal’s performance through this disastrous season, and they are hefty favorites against Leganes here.
