Half of this year’s Champions League Round of 16 clubs hail from either England or Spain, so it’s no shock to see six of those clubs listed among the top nine favorites to win the competition. Liverpool, Manchester City, and Barcelona are each seen as a cut above by the oddsmakers, but clubs that have missed out on titles recently like Bayern Munich and Juventus are right behind the favorites. We will have two of these titans clash when Manchester City faces Real Madrid in the Round of 16, and one set of fans will be terribly disappointed to see their club crash out of the tournament before the quarterfinals.

After claiming their first Champions League title in 14 years last year, Liverpool are the favorites to win this year’s Champions League. The Reds have been indomitable in Premier League play, racking up an absurd 24-1-0 record through their first 25 games of the season, and it has now been over a year since their last defeat in league play. Jurgen Klopp has this club firing on all cylinders, and their overall dominance in both phases of the game makes Liverpool tough to beat.
The brilliance of Mo Salah has been slightly overshadowed by just how great this back line has been in 2019-20. Virgil van Dijk is the best center back in the sport, and Alisson has been phenomenal in net. Their play has led to Liverpool giving up a scant 15 goals in league play, and Atletico Madrid might not score against the Reds given their style of play and lack of offensive weapons.
Manchester City are the second favorite to win the Champions League. City were the favorites in the knockout rounds in each of the last two years though, and they have yet to make it past the semifinals of the competition. Pep Guardiola’s squad is having an abysmal season by its lofty standards, losing six times in league play already this campaign, so it’s surprising to see City installed as this much of a favorite despite a tough draw with Real Madrid in the Round of 16.
The Citizens can score with the best clubs in the world, but the issue is an unreliable back line. Manchester City’s center backs have been a major issue, and Guardiola is hoping that Aymeric Laporte can bolster the defense with his return. Laporte was called the best fullback in the world by Guardiola upon his return to action in late January, so he is optimistic that City can turn their fortunes around in the Champions League.
Trouble in Barcelona might subvert the club’s hopes of winning another Champions League crown. Lionel Messi and club director Eric Abidal are feuding in the papers following the dismissal of Ernesto Valverde, and the Blaugrana can ill afford to have their talisman at anything less than 100 percent. Messi is instrumental to everything Barcelona want to do on the attack, and this team doesn’t have anyone that can replace him. The rags are running with rumors that this might spell the end for Messi’s incredible career at the Camp Nou, so stay away from Barca at just 5-1.
Paris Saint-Germain could provide some value at this price. PSG have made a habit of underwhelming performances on this stage, but this club is bound to break through sooner or later given its incredible talent. Neymar is with the club for at least one more season, and Kylian Mbappe, Angel Maria, and Edinson Cavani make this team terrifying to defend against. PSG have a winnable match against Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16, and the talent on this squad makes them a tantalizing choice.
