After months of limbo, the Champions League will culminate on Sunday in Portugal and the top teams from France and Germany will square off in the final. Paris Saint-Germain have dominated Ligue 1 for the last decade. PSG have run roughshod over their domestic opponents, but they have yet to find Champions League success before this year. They will have their hands full in their quest to win their first title as they take on German juggernauts Bayern Munich. Odds Analysis
Bayern Munich have been unstoppable during their romp through the Champions League. They were the only club to win all six of their Group Stage games, and they dismantled Tottenham Hotspur by an aggregate score of 10-3. The Bundesliga titans smashed Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16 before putting together their masterpiece against Barcelona in the quarterfinals. Bayern humbled Barcelona in an 8-2 drubbing that led to Barca immediately firing its manager, and they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lyon in the semifinals. This club has won 14 straight matches in all competitions since the restart, so they will be tough to take down.
There’s no question that PSG have the talent to pull off the upset. The star-crossed club believes it is a team of destiny after so many failures in the competition over the past decade. They looked sharp in the Group Stage topping Real Madrid, and they overcame a first leg deficit to topple Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16. PSG stunned Atalanta in the quarterfinals, scoring twice in the last three minutes to erase a 1-0 deficit and move on, and that emboldened them to put together their best performance in months against Red Bull Leipzig in the semifinals. This club has the chance to win a rare quadruple this year, as PSG won the Ligue 1 title and two domestic cups.
Key Injuries
It appears that Bayern Munich only have one injury concern ahead of the final. Jerome Boateng came off at halftime against Lyon, and he is reportedly dealing with a slight strain. Boateng is considered probably to play on Sunday though.
Kylian Mbappe is fortunately back in action for PSG, but first-choice goalkeeper Keylor Navas might miss the match as he continues to deal with a thigh injury. Marco Verratti has a calf injury that has kept him out of a couple matches now, and Idrissa Gueye is considered doubtful.
Matchup to Watch
These are two of the best offenses in the world. PSG are led by Mbappe and Neymar. These are two of the five most talented soccer players on the planet, so while they aren’t a perfect complement, they can bag a ton of goals. Interestingly, neither player has scored in the last two stages of the Champions League though. Marquinhos and Angel Di Maria have made their mark, but not the two superstars on the roster.
Bayern Munich have scored an absurd 42 goals in 10 Champions League matches this season. No club has been able to find a counter for their offense, as Robert Lewandowski has been easily the best striker in the tournament by a significant margin. Lewandowski has 15 goals in Champions League play this year, while Serge Gnabry has slotted in nine tallies.
