Tuesday Champions League Picks

The Champions League has been an English celebration. All four English teams are in the Quarterfinals, and an English team is favored to win the competition. However, we will see an English team exit the tournament this round. Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City are pitted against one another in one of the quarterfinals, and one of them will have to exit. Liverpool are heavily favored to make it at least two English teams in the semifinals though, and they will be taking on Porto on Tuesday.

Manchester City -135

These teams will meet three times over the next two weeks, twice in the Champions League and once in the Premier League. Manchester City will be favored in every match. City are once again on top of the Premier League, and they bested Spurs 1-0 in London back in late October. City have an abundance of goal scoring talent, and they have been in good form.

Tottenham have not been in good form. Although Spurs have played well in the Champions League, they are 1-1-4 in their last six Premier League matches, and they have not gotten much offense out of a prolific line-up. Harry Kane was their only offense for many of those games, but Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min, and Christian Eriksen have gotten involved once more.

There is one major injury concern for both teams. Eric Dier looks set to miss the match for Spurs, and his presence in the back will be missed. He can break up attacks, and that will be needed against City.

Sergio Aguero might miss the match for Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola seems optimistic that his top scorer will play. The Argentinian is leading the Premier League with 19 goals, so a potential absence is a big loss.

Eriksen is going to be the key in this match. Tottenham are unlikely to hold City at bay, especially without Dier, and he is responsible for orchestrating Spurs attack. Kane, Son, and Moura are solid finishers, but someone needs to get the ball into the final third for them to score.

In the end, I don’t see it being enough as City pick up a road win.

Prediction: Manchester City 2, Tottenham Hotspur 1

Liverpool FC -332
FC Porto +952
Draw +467
Over/Under 3

Liverpool are hanging right with City in their bid to win the Premier League, and the Reds would love to win the Champions League too. They got what was perceived to be the best draw when they were matched up against Porto, and Liverpool are out to score a multiple goal victory over the Portuguese club.

Porto seem likely to be without Alex Telles. Their designated penalty taker went down with a hip injury against Braga last weekend, so his status is in doubt this week.

These teams met in the Round of 16 last year, and Liverpool rendered the second leg meaningless with their performance in the first. Liverpool crushed Porto 5-0 in Portugal, with Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino scoring, and Sadio Mane netting a hat trick. Porto couldn’t score a goal in either game.

The visitors have a varied attack and don’t rely on just one person to score. Tiquinho has been Porto’s top scorer, but Moussa Marega and Yacine Brahimi have gotten in on the action too.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will again count on Salah, Firmino, and Mane to overwhelm opponents, but they haven’t been as proficient as they were last year. Salah especially seems a bit tired after not getting any rest due to the World Cup, and he is not the goal scoring machine he was in 2017-18.

That being said, I don’t think Porto stand a chance. Liverpool are in another class, and they will show it.

Prediction: Liverpool 3, Porto 0
