MLS Saturday, June 3 Parlay Picks

It’s been a very interesting MLS season so far. We are closing in on the halfway point of the campaign, and there is a surprising team in first place. FC Cincinnati is eight points clear in the race for the MLS Supporters’ Shield as the team with the best regular season record. They were the worst team in the league from 2019 to 2021, never finishing better than 24th in the overall table, but they are thriving after a breakthrough 2022 campaign. That makes FC Cincinnati one of my top plays this week alongside Minnesota United FC.

FC Cincinnati has an unblemished home record this season. This team is 11-1-3 overall and a perfect 8-0-0 at home. They have spent their last two games on the road, but they were able to go into Colorado and New York City FC and beat both of those teams to go a perfect 5-0 in the month of May.

This club has been absolutely superb on defense through the first half of the season. They have only allowed 15 goals in their 15 games, and they have four clean sheets in their eight home games. FC Cincinnati has only surrendered five goals at home this season, so I love the opportunity to jump on them considering how bad the Chicago Fire have been once again this season.

Once again, Chicago looks set to be one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference. The Fire are 3-4-8, and they have just one win in their seven road games. They gave up eight goals in their four road games in May, and that should bode well for FC Cincinnati. While FC Cincinnati does focus on defense more than offense, the club has some talent up top in Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vazquez. Acosta has six goals and three assists, while Vazquez has four goals and two assists.

Minnesota United FC is my second pick for the MLS Parlay of the Week. The Loons have a distinct home field advantage, but they haven’t performed well in the Twin Cities to this point. They have drawn four of their six home games, yet that should be changing pretty soon. This club should be coming into of its own on offense, as they start to figure things out up top. The only player with more than two goals is Bongokuhle Hlongwane, but that should change even though the Loons are exploring a sale of No. 9 Luis Amarilla.

Kervin Arriaga should be able to make more of an impact, and it’s only a matter of time before Robin Lod breaks through in a big way. Lod netted 22 goals and 12 assists from 2020 to 2022 with Minnesota United FC, yet he is goalless with just two assists at this point.

Their opponents Toronto FC have yet to win a road game this season. Toronto is 0-4-3 on the road, and the Reds are a team to fade for a while. Their decision to spend big on Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi has not paid off in the slightest, and Bernardeschi is now dealing with injuries. This offense is not nearly as dangerous as it was supposed to be, and that’s a good sign for the Loons.

Additionally, this back line has some real problems. Michael Bradley is a few years past his prime and should no longer be starting, and Mark Anthony-Kaye is spending too much time breaking up passes. The outer backs aren’t great either, so MNUFC should score at least a couple goals.
