Last we checked on the NCAA men’s college basketball scene the Connecticut Huskies were cutting down the nets for a second straight season after knocking off Purdue for their fourth national championship in 14 seasons. They became the first repeat champion since the 2006-2007 Florida Gators and the Huskies are among the favorites to become the first team in more than half a century to win three straight championships. They also averted a crisis in the offseason when Danny Hurley elected to return after being courted by the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.

We see a lot of the same powerhouse programs sitting atop the preseason national championship odds board led by the Duke Blue Devils. Another stellar freshman class led by ESPN’s top ranked player Cooper Flagg and five-star Khaman Maluach are expected to play significant minutes. So the question again rises in Durham; are the youngsters ready to shoulder such a huge load? Flagg is already been hailed as the best player in the country without even playing a collegiate game. Duke might be favored to win the national championship but they enter the season ranked No. 7 in the preseason top 25 poll.

Kansas is the preseason No. 1 team in the national poll and among a handful of teams at the top of the future odds board. No matter what happens, Bill Self always has his Jayhawks in the mix winning a national title in 2022. However, second round exits in the last two NCAA Tournaments have KU on edge. This isn’t supposed to happen in Lawrence. Self again hit the portal hard adding AJ Storr, elite shooter Rylen Griffen and last year’s Summit League Player of the Year Zeke Mayo. Alabama looks to build off its trip to the Final Four adding Rutgers transfer Clifford Omoruyi to beef up the interior defense, which was a problem last season.

Duke Blue Devils

Cooper Flagg is already being mentioned for the NBA Hall of Fame and he hasn’t even played a college game yet. A preseason All-American and the projected first pick in the NBA Draft, Flagg leads another loaded class of freshman into Durham raising expectations to an obscene level. If the kids do what’s expected the Blue Devils could easily win the ACC and contend for a national championship. A hulking presence in the middle, Khaman Maluach is a versatile big man that will eat up rebounds. The veteran presence of Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster will help smooth the transition.

Connecticut Huskies

We haven’t seen a three-peat since John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins in the 1970s showing just how dominate the Huskies have been over the last two seasons. And they’re in a good spot for another go with Alex Karaban turning down a likely shot at NBA stardom and returning for another season. In 39 starts a season ago Karaban averaged 13.3 points shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. Last year’s Big East sixth man award winner Hassan Diarra moves into a starting role and Saint Mary’s transfer Aidan Mahaney strengthens the backcourt.

Houston Cougars

Continuity has kept Kelvin Sampson’s squad at the top of the national rankings and once again the Cougars are in a spot to compete for a national championship. They’ve been efficient at both ends of the floor ranking among KenPom’s top 5 in each of the last four years. And in that span they’ve advanced to at least the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Four starters return but the fifth is a big one with Jamal Shead gone from the program. Milos Uzan, who averaged 9.0 points at Oklahoma last year, was brought in to run the point.

Kansas Jayhawks

Conference realignment added another program to battle with Kansas at the top of the Big 12. Last year it was Houston and this year Arizona joins the fray. You can only control what you can control and Bill Self is a master roster manipulator. Entering last season as the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Jayhawks had a down season. That’s relative, though, since the bar is set at a disgustingly high level. Even though Self was fixated on improving roster depth accomplishing his goal with transfers Zeke Mayo, AJ Storr and Rylan Griffen. Hunter Dickinson is a national player of the year contender and Dajuan Harris Jr. is a veteran leader giving Self what he needs.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Their first trip to the Final Four was only a start for Alabama. The foundation was laid a year earlier when the Tide won a program record 31 games but lost in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and kept moving into last season. They were able to keep leading scorer and national player of the year candidate Mark Sears along with third leading scorer Grant Nelson. Transfer Clifford Omoruyi gives the Tide a rim protector they lacked last year and a foundation in which to build on.
