2024-25 NBA Championship Betting Odds
The Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder are the NBA futures odds favorite heading into the unofficial second half of the season. Every team got nearly a week off for the All-Star break with the league returning to action on Wednesday with a matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets. The acquisition of Luka Doncic at the trade deadline did wonders for LA’s championship odds shrinking to the lowest they’ve been all season. The biggest mover, though, is Cleveland which entered the break tied with OKC for the best record in the NBA. The Cavs opened the season with odds around 40/1 and even a season-opening 15-game winning streak didn’t have a major impact. But the Cavs kept winning entering the break with four in a row and eight victories in their last nine games. Along with the favorites the Cavs are the only team with shorter than 10/1 odds.
OCK leapfrogged Boston as the favorite a few weeks ago and have been the most consistent team all season. The Thunder have the largest average point differential at +12.9, more than two points per game higher than the next best club. They boast the NBA’s top scoring defense and are the only team to rank among the top 5 in average points scored and allowed. They also have MVP front-runner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who leads the league averaging 32.5 points per game.
There are teams that have failed to live up to their preseason expectations. The biggest disappointment so far is probably Philadelphia. Acquiring Paul George put the Sixers among the top 5 favorites when the season started. However, injuries delayed his start to the campaign and partnering him with Joel Embiid hasn’t worked out. Of course it hasn’t helped that Embiid was shelved for a bunch of games with injuries. The Sixers closed the first half with five straight losses, three of those with George, Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in the lineup. Philly has the fifth shortest odds of teams in the East and we’ll take a look at the conference this week.

Boston Celtics
The East boasts two of the top three favorites and from then on the futures odds board is dominated by the West. Boston started the new year going 8-6 and at times looking disinterested. They were one of the hottest teams before the break, though, winning seven of eight games, including their last three. And they’ve been one of the best defensive teams over that span getting back to what worked well for them in last season’s championship run.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavs are definitely a serious title contender based on their first half performance. You don’t put together two winning streaks of 12 games or more without being good. They lead the NBA in three-point accuracy and score the second-most points per game with five players averaging more than 13.0 points per game. That includes recent addition De’Andre Hunter, who had 12 and 18 in his first two games.
New York Knicks
The Knickerbockers won nine of 11 pre-break games and put some pressure on Boston for third place in the East. However, questions about their legitimacy remain. One of their setbacks in that stretch was by 27 points at home to Boston, their second this season to the C’s with a combined margin of 50 points. The Knicks may be the third best team in the East, but there is a gap between them and the top two.
Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks are hopeful the All-Star break allows Giannis Antetokounmpo to heal the calf injury that cost him the final six games prior to the hiatus. They went 3-3 in those games needing a road win over Minnesota to break even. This will be a different team moving forward following the trade of Khris Middleton, a key performer in the team’s title run a few years ago. They got a younger, healthier version of Middleton in Kyle Kuzma, who had a double-double against the Wolves.
Philadelphia 76ers
By default the Sixers end up on this list. There are 10 teams in the conference with a better record, but the Sixers have name recognition. Unfortunately for them the big three hasn’t clicked. It could be that they haven’t had a lot of time together on the floor and if they do create some chemistry they could make a bid for the play-in tournament. Right now, though, they look more like a lottery squad as they sit 14 games under .500
