2024-25 NBA Championship Betting Odds
The Boston Celtics continue to rein supreme in the NBA futures market, but the Cleveland Cavaliers are the kings of the hardwood in the early part of the 2024-25 NBA season. Monday’s win at Chicago stretched the Cavs’ season-opening winning streak to 12, the best since the record-setting Warriors in 2015-16. On Nov. 19 the Celtics and Cavs will meet in Boston in the first of three games this season. The hot start has improved Cleveland’s NBA championship odds, but the Cavs are still jumbled with several other teams in the second tier of contenders. The Celtics, Thunder and Knicks are the three teams boasting shorter than 10/1 odds through the end of last week.
There are some quality teams sitting between 10/1 and 20/1 on the odds board with five of the six residing in the Western Conference. That side of the league appears to be stronger overall, but the heavyweights so far are the East’s Celtics and Cavs. Boston closed last week with a loss to the Hawks, which some might find disturbing. They dropped to 9-3 but are right around the same pace as last season when their third setback came in their 14th game. Just a week earlier they beat Atlanta by 30 on the road. Don’t be too concerned about that loss, those things happen over the course of a long campaign. The Celtics are one of the most efficient teams on both ends of the court and their +12.2 point differential is the best in the East and second-best in the NBA.
The second favorite OKC Thunder closed the week tied with Phoenix and Golden State for the best record in the West. But things could get dicey for them in the next few weeks. Nothing affects futures odds and outcomes more than injuries and OKC is dealing with a big one. Chet Holmgren, who is averaging 16.4 points and 8.7 rebounds, hurt his hip on a hard fall and is expected to miss significant time. It happened in a game against the Warriors that OKC lost and leaves them without a big man. OKC did beat the Clippers, 134-128, in their first game without Holmgren getting 45 points from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Cleveland Cavaliers
There have been some surprises both good and bad through the first several weeks of the season; we’ll take a look at the teams I feel have been the biggest. You can’t start a season 12-0 and not be amazed. The Cavs showed glimpses of being a threat the last few years with shrewd draft picks and free agent signings. They won at least 48 games in each of the last two seasons and the core has put it all together at the start of the campaign. They lead the NBA in three-point shooting, field goal percentage and scoring. They are deep, too, with no player averaging more than 31 minutes.
Phoenix Suns
Some might not consider the Suns a surprise given the roster they have. However, with the same major players last year they struggled, though injuries played a role. They won seven in a row before a loss to Sacramento on Sunday, and we’ll see how the team differs from last season with leading scorer Kevin Durant sidelined for a few games with a calf injury. Though the big three of Durant, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker is the heart of the team, they are much deeper after last season’s debacle.
Golden State Warriors
Things changed in the Bay Area when Klay Thompson left and most thought the Warriors would be a play-in contender at best. That still may be the case, but the club is enjoying a strong start with the help of veteran Steph Curry. Former top draft pick Jonathan Kuminga has blossomed in his role off the bench and Buddy Hield has more than made up for Thompson’s loss, at least for now, by shooting 48.8 percent from three-point range.
Dallas Mavericks
The Mavs are one team that has disappointed in the early season after a run to the NBA Finals. They seemingly added to their roster with Thompson, joining Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but a loss to Klay’s former team put Dallas below .500 through 11 games. It’s great to have star players, but role guys are needed to do the dirty work. The Mavs suffered when Dereck Lively was injured dropping three of four games.
Philadelphia 76ers
If you’re going to struggle I guess it’s better to do it early in the season rather than later. Philly knew Joel Embiid and Paul George were going to miss the start of the season so their 2-8 record shouldn’t be alarming. They are banking on those two lifting them once they return. Welp, George has been in the lineup and the Sixers lost four of five games he played. Embiid returned in the most recent game and was rusty scoring 13 points on 2 of 11 shooting. Things should get better, but they might not.
