The 2025 NCAA Tournament is down to the Final Four which takes place on Saturday, April 5 with all four No. 1 seeds still alive. For only the second time in history, the Final Four will see all of the top four seeds, as the only other occurrence was in 2008. The Duke Blue Devils are the favorite to win the national title at even money odds. They are followed by the Florida Gators, Houston Cougars and Auburn Tigers. The 2025 Final Four takes place at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, April 5. The first game at 6:09 pm Eastern on CBS will have Florida a slight favorite against Auburn, while the second game at 8:49 on CBS will have Duke favored against Houston. The Duke Blue Devils are the top betting favorite and they have looked as good as any team in the NCAA Tournament so far, as they rolled to big wins over Mount St. Mary’s and Baylor in the first two rounds, had slightly more trouble against Arizona in the Sweet Sixteen and then routed Alabama in the Elite Eight. Second in March Madness futures is Florida and they routed Norfolk State in the first round but had a difficult test in the second round against defending champion Connecticut. Florida rolled over Maryland in the Sweet Sixteen but then had to fight hard to get past Texas Tech in the Elite Eight. The Houston Cougars and Auburn Tigers are the other two top seeds and they had very little trouble in the first round and were only moderately tested in the second round. Each had to overcome adversity in the Sweet Sixteen, but Houston slipped past Purdue and Auburn rallied to beat Michigan. Neither team had much trouble in the Elite Eight, as Houston dominated Tennessee and Auburn was too much for Michigan State.

NCAA Tournament History

The NCAA Tournament began in 1939, growing in size and stature over the years. The first tournament consisted of eight teams, and the format remained unchanged until 1951, when the field was doubled to 16. The number of participating schools doubled again to 32 in 1975 and reached 64 in 1985.

Now, there are slots for 68 of the best D-I college basketball squads in America. There are 32 spaces reserved for automatic qualifiers – teams that win their end-of-the-season conference tournament. The selection committee picks the other 36 teams as at-large entrants based on their overall record, RPI, net rating, and other factors.

We may see another big change coming to March Madness in the very near future. The NCAA Transformation Committee recommended expanding the number of teams in the NCAA Tournament to accommodate the growing number of Division I teams in the country. There are now more than 350 Division I college basketball teams, and the committee wants to guarantee that at least a quarter of those programs can potentially make the NCAA Tournament. That could mean an expansion to a 96-team March Madness in the future.
