At the onset of future market gambling, four teams stand apart as favorites for a dubious distinction. The Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks are the top picks of the gambling public to score the fewest points in the NFL this season. While those picks are obvious, they are also well founded. All four teams are facing the prospects of either a poor quarterback or the lack of a quality supporting cast. With the possible exception of the Bears, none of these teams have quality quarterbacks.
Odds Analysis – NFL Team to Score the Fewest Points in 2022
The Atlanta Falcons opened as a +550 favorite to score the fewest points in the NFL this season. Following the Falcons are the Houston Texans +550, Chicago Bears +600, Seattle Seahawks +750, Pittsburgh Steelers +1200, New York Jets +1200, Carolina Panthers +1300, New York Giants +1400, Detroit Lions +1600, New England Patriots +1800
Falcons Not Expected to Fly
At the beginning of the season is a new-look Atlanta Falcons team. The biggest change is at quarterback. Matt Ryan was shipped to the Indianapolis Colts for the minimal gain of a third round draft pick. Ryan, age 37, will get his final shot at a Super Bowl ring. But the Falcons are stuck with Marcus Mariota as their number one quarterback entering training camp.
Atlanta general manager Terry Fontenot said financial was the most important consideration for trading Ryan. The Falcons will take a hit this year, but next year there will be plenty of cap room available. Of course, these moves ultimately mean that Atlanta is in the beginning stages of a massive rebuild. But that does explain why the Falcons traded Ryan for what equates to a sack of footballs.
Ryan departed Atlanta with most of the Falcon franchise's all-time records. Mariota arrives as the injury plagued draft bust that never fulfilled his hype. That is not a good formula for scoring points.
Houston Texans Agree in No Pain, No Gain Philosophy
In like manner to the Falcons, the Houston Texans traded their top quarterback away. Deshawn Watson was sent to the Cleveland Browns. But the Texans made a haul on the incoming side, unlike the Falcons. Houston got three first round draft picks. Also, the Texans got one third round, and two fourth round picks. Houston is well positioned for a strong future. However, there is not much to get excited about for the present.
New head coach Lovie Smith takes over the same gutted roster David Culley suffered with in 2022. And then David Mills is on top of the depth chart as the starting quarterback. Mills was a third round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Stanford. Last year he played 13 games for the Texans. Mills compiled an 88.8 rating with a 16/10 TD/INT ratio. In defense of Mills, he doesn’t have any help from the supporting cast.
Fields of Dreams Likely Nightmare for Chicago
Namely, Justin Fields was one of the most celebrated picks of the 2021 NFL Draft. Bears fans believed that the 11th overall pick would solve the team’s perpetual quarterback problem once and for all. Instead, Field was thrown to the wolves in 2021. He ended up with a 73.2 rating and a 7/10 TD/INT ratio. It’s not that Fields is bad or lacks ability. It’s that he has nothing of quality surrounding him.
Now Matt Eberflus takes over as the Bears' head coach. His first priority is to get Fields up to speed. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and quarterback coach Andrew Janocko have their hands full.
2022 NFL Team to Score the Fewest Points
On the whole, the Houston Texans rank as the most hopeless offense in football.
