The Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to make NFL history with a third straight Super Bowl title. In order to do so they must beat the team they started the streak against. The Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles meet in Super Bowl LIX in a rematch from the championship game two years earlier. Going off as a 1-point dog in that matchup, the Chiefs go a game-winning field goal from Harrison Butker for the 38-35 outright triumph. The early line at the Crypto sportsbook has the roles reversed with the Chiefs laying 1-point. The Eagles reached their fifth Super Bowl with an offensive display in the NFC Championship. Behind three rushing touchdowns from Saquon Barley and Jalen Hurts they set a championship game scoring record in the 55-23 win. The Eagles easily covered the spread for their ninth payout in the last 12 games.

The teams combined for only five losses during the regular season so we are getting a matchup between two of the NFL’s best. Despite having a negative yards-per-play average the Chiefs went 15-2 pulling out all their one-score games and having some luck involved. But they say good teams create their own luck. What’s also been impressive for the Chiefs is the ability of Patrick Mahomes to adapt. When he first burst on the scene he was slinging the ball all over the yard and the Chiefs boasted one of the top offenses in the game.
The Chiefs don’t have the skill players they once did and the offensive line allowed 41 sacks, 13 more than they surrendered during the 2023 regular season. Instead, Mahomes evolved and the defense picked up the slack. KC had an outburst against Buffalo in the AFC Championship scoring a season-high in their 32-29 victory. However, I don’t expect them to have that much success scoring the football against a stingy Eagles group.
Mahomes was efficient if not spectacular, much like he’s been all season. He threw for 245 yards and a TD. Mahomes has valued the football as well with zero interceptions and 13 TD passes in his last eight starts. The defense carried the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory last season and while the group has been good again this season there are some holes. They’ve allowed an average of nearly 150 yards rushing during the postseason and will need to slow down Saquon Barkley to increase their chances.
Barkley was a wrecking ball celebrating his escape from New York with one of the finest seasons by a running back in NFL history. He ran for 2,005 yards and 13 TDs and has been equally effective in the playoffs going for more than 115 yards in each game while averaging almost 7.0 yards per carry. It’s a shame he’s not facing the Rams. In the division round Barkley rushed for 205 yards, which was his second lowest output of the year against them. During the season Barkley had a pair of 70-yard TD runs and totaled 255 yards on 26 carries.
The Eagles are more than just Barkley, though. Much like his counterpart Hurts doesn’t have the gaudy numbers but he’s been steady and efficient. He’s completed nearly 70 percent of his passes this postseason with three TDs and no picks. In three playoff games the Eagles have yet to commit a turnover and boast a ridiculous plus-10 turnover margin. The Chiefs have coughed it up just once in the playoffs, but a team that forced 20 turnovers during the regular season has yet to register a takeaway in the playoffs.
The teams are similar in a lot of ways and not just their record. Defenses have been solid and QBs make plays. The Chiefs are more familiar with close games having won all 11 of their one-score contests this season. And that will carry over to a record-break Super Bowl victory.
