Surprisingly, the Jacksonville Jaguars are the second largest favorites to win their division in the AFC. That’s because the AFC South is arguably the weakest division in the league, and Jacksonville came on strong at the end of last season. The Jaguars could have a very explosive offense in the third year under center for Trevor Lawrence, while no one else in the division has a decent option under center.

Trevor Lawrence put together a solid 2022 campaign for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he should be even better in 2023 as he continues to develop as a passer. The 23-year-old has quality receivers with Calvin Ridley free to return from a one-year suspension, and the run game is solid with Clemson teammate Travis Etienne Jr. being used as a dual threat option behind an experienced offensive line.
This defense doesn’t have a lot of talent, but it is a gritty bunch that played above its talent level in 2022. Now, the hope is that young players like Travon Walker and Devin Lloyd can develop over the coming year or two. Walker was the No. 1 overall pick last year, yet he didn’t make as much of an impact as Lloyd.
It’s very likely that the Tennessee Titans turn to one of their young quarterbacks at some point this season. Tennessee is running it back with Ryan Tannehill under center, but it’s clear that he is not the long-term answer. Tannehill had the help of the NFL’s most dominant running back, and he could only succeed off of play action despite Derrick Henry running for big chunks of yardage. Malik Willis has yet to throw a touchdown pass in the NFL and needs a lot of seasoning. Will Levis was taken with the first pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft and needs some time to develop too.
Defensively, the Titans have two very good players in Jeffery Simmons and Kevin Byard. Simmons is one of the best 3-4 defensive ends in the NFL, while Byard is a disciplined safety that can cover a lot of ground.
Indianapolis will be throwing Anthony Richardson’s feet into the fire rather quickly after taking him with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Richardson may not be a Day 1 starter since he is still raw, but Gardner Minshew will be unlikely to hold the starting position for long either considering the Colts can potentially contend quickly with the right signal caller. The offensive line will be looking to redeem itself after a dismal campaign, and that bodes well for both Jonathan Taylor and whoever is under center.
There is great value in the Colts to win the division as the defense should be better too. Talisman Shaq Leonard only played in three games last season, and his return should help the second level considerably. DeForest Buckner is still a menace in the center of the defensive line too.
Houston is going to need at least two years before it is competitive once again. Bill O’Brien the general manager totally destroyed the backbone of this team, gutting the roster from the floor up. The Texans finally seem to be on the right foot once more, but they will need a bit of time for their draft picks to develop.
Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud was taken with the No. 2 overall pick, and he will look to be the most successful quarterback at the next level in Buckeyes’ history. Meanwhile, new head coach DeMeco Ryans will look to build the defense around No. 3 overall pick Will Anderson out of Alabama. Anderson was seen as the most talented defender in the NFL Draft, and he will have a buddy in former Crimson Tide teammate Henry To’o To’o alongside him in Houston.
