2024-25 NFL Odds To Make The Playoffs

With the start of the 2024 NFL season a few months away it’s time to start talking about futures odds and the market is robust. There are Super Bowl odds, conference odds and even division champion odds. You can also wager on whether or not a team will make the playoffs at the conclusion of the 2024 NFL regular season. Those are just some of the team futures with another market devoted entirely to individuals. The NFL expanded its playoff field starting at the conclusion of the 2020 regular season with one additional wild card added to each conference. And since then we’ve seen two teams qualify for the postseason with a losing record and several others compete for the Lombardi Trophy with a record of 9-8.

For two decades the New England Patriots were the model NFL franchise winning a record number of division titles and Super Bowls under the direction of Bill Belichick with Tom Brady at quarterback. That ended a few years ago when Brady departed and now the coach is gone, and the Pats are an unknown commodity. Jerod Mayo takes over with the hope that Drake Maye can lead the offense, but the Pats have the longest odds to make the playoffs after going 4-13 last season. Carolina had the worst record in the NFL last season and boasts the second longest odds to end their six-year playoff drought.

Not surprisingly the teams that battled in Super Bowl LVIII in February are heavily priced to reach the postseason again. The Kansas City Chiefs have made the playoffs in nine consecutive seasons with four Super Bowl appearances and three titles in the last five years. They beat San Francisco last season for their second straight Lombardi Trophy with both teams having odds longer than -500 to qualify for the postseason. Apparently oddsmakers can’t make up their mind about the Chicago Bears, who opened with negative odds to both make and miss the playoffs. Injuries are a part of the game and one key player going down can change the odds. Barring that and since we don’t have a crystal ball, let’s take a look at teams that have value reaching or not qualifying for the playoffs. New York Jets

Playing in a division with Buffalo and Miami doesn’t give the Jets much wiggle room, but having a healthy Aaron Rodgers for a full season spreads optimism around the team’s headquarters. As you know Rodgers played only four snaps in last season’s opener before an Achilles injury cost him the season. The club went 7-10 using four different starting quarterbacks and the draft was heavy on the offensive side to bolster a unit that stunk. Rodgers alone should be worth a few more wins pushing Gang Green to the postseason for the first time since the 2010 campaign.

The good teams all have one thing in common, and if the Browns get consistent play from QB Deshaun Watson they can be a powerhouse in the AFC. Boasting a defense that ranked first against the pass and in yards allowed, the Browns should again be strong on that side of the football. Watson needs to be the guy the club forked out a bunch of money to, though, for the club to reach the upper echelon. He started only six games last season with four other QBs getting at least one start. Joe Flacco guided the Browns to the playoffs, but he’s no longer with the team leaving Watson to do the heavy lifting. I can see them reaching double-figures in wins and qualifying for the playoffs with a nice payout.

Jacksonville Jaguars

I think most people with knowledge of the NFL would agree that the Jags underachieved last season. They finished 9-8, the same record as the season before when they reached and won a playoff game. However, last season they didn’t qualify and all eyes will be on Trevor Lawrence after the former No. 1 overall draft pick inked a healthy contract extension. Fewer turnovers from Lawrence will help the offense and the defense got a boost with new coordinator Ryan Nielson taking over. I don’t think the AFC South is particularly strong giving the Jags an opportunity to move up in wins and the standings.
