Laiatu Latu and Dallas Turner are the top two choices to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award this season. Latu went with the 15th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft to the Indianapolis Colts, while Turner was the 17th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Latu and Turner are listed with very similar NFL betting odds of +280 and +330 respectively and then it is a big jump to Byron Murphy II at odds of +1100. Murphy went to the Seattle Seahawks with the 16th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Defensive end Laiatu Latu was taken by the Colts. He won the Ted Hendricks Award, Lombardi Award, and Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year Award and was a unanimous All-American last season. Linebacker Dallas Turner from Alabama was taken by the Vikings. He was a Consensus All-American and was the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.

Cornerback Quinyon Mitchell was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 22nd pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was a 2-time First Team All-Mac player. Linebacker Jared Verse was the 19th pick of the Los Angeles Rams out of Florida State. Verse was a two-time First Team All-American and he had 18 sacks and 29.5 tackles for loss over the last two years. He will look to take the place of future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald who retired. Cornerback Terrion Arnold from Alabama was the 24th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He was a First Team All-American and First Team All-SEC player.
NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Picks
The first thing to keep in mind is that an edge rusher or cornerback has won this award in eight of the last nine years. That makes me look to Dallas Turner in Minnesota. He had 22.5 sacks over the past three years at Alabama including 10 in his junior season. Brian Flores is known as an aggressive defensive coordinator and Turner should get a chance to put up some big numbers. Keep in mind that Danielle Hunter left in free agency, so Turner can step right into a good spot. I think Turner has the edge on Latu simply because of the situation. The Colts have not had a player reach double-digits in sacks since 2019.
If you want to go with a longshot then I think Mitchell is the choice. He goes into a good situation in Philadelphia where he should be playing opposite Darius Slay Jr. The pass defense for the Eagles struggled last season, but it should be improved this year with the addition of Mitchell. The numbers in college suggest that Mitchell could be a star in the NFL. He allowed just 27 receptions on 62 targets and had a combined 15 interceptions and pass breakups. You should be aware that just three of the last 10 winners of this award have been cornerbacks, but Sauce Gardner of the New York Jets did win it in 2022.
