Antonio Brown has carried his antics to his new team and it didn’t take long for the Oakland Raiders to become fed up with their star receiver. Brown and Mayock argued on Wednesday and the Raiders were expected to take immediate action. There is a chance that the Raiders may suspend Brown with the goal of voiding the more than $30 million in guaranteed money in Brown’s contract. Brown and Mayock got into it because of Brown’s Instagram post that displayed a letter from Mayock detailing about $54,000 in fines. The confrontation between Brown and Mayock reportedly was not private, as it happened in front of most of the team.
It should be noted that as of Thursday afternoon the Raiders had not officially taken any action toward Brown other than to say he was not at practice. Brown could be suspended for up to four weeks by the Raiders for conduct detrimental to the team.
The incident on Wednesday could fit the definition of detrimental conduct, as Brown didn’t take part in some individual receiver drills and he was seen firing a football into the fence after catching a pass from Derek Carr. Brown was also heard yelling at a strength and conditioning coach. And all of this was in addition to the confrontation with Mayock.
The antics of Brown should come as no surprise to the Raiders, as Brown was a continual thorn in the side of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brown is considered one of the top receivers in the NFL, but his diva personality has grown old among many of his teammates and coaches. The Raiders gave up a third and a fifth round pick for Brown and signed him to a three-year, $30.125 million extension. Brown showed up at training camp last month with frostbite on his feet and then he had his saga with the NFL over use of his old helmet.
The Raiders had quite a bit of patience with Brown at the beginning, but Mayock gave Brown an all-in or all-out warning some weeks ago and his latest letter to Brown was seen as a warning that the team is not going to put up with more antics from the wide receiver. Brown has a huge ego and it is already obvious to many that his time in Oakland may be short.
The news of Brown’s possible suspension has also impacted the odds on Monday’s game between the Raiders and Broncos. The game had been listed as a pick at BookMaker, with the total at 43.5 before news of the suspension. The current number is now Denver -2, with the total at 43.5.
