Favorites

Freddie Kitchens and Mike McCarthy are co-favorites at odds of +800. Kitchens doesn’t have the experience of McCarthy, but he does have the advantage of being responsible for Cleveland being much better on offense in the second half of the season and he has a very good working relationship with Mayfield. There is no doubt that the NFL is a quarterback driven league and Mayfield is the future for Cleveland. Mayfield had 19 TDs and just seven interceptions in the last eight games with Kitchens as the offensive coordinator.

Kitchens has the fans and the media in Cleveland in his corner. He wears a bright orange "Dawg Pound" sweatshirt and he is entertaining in his press conferences. There is no question that the Browns need to keep Kitchens, but will owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager John Dorsey give him the head job? It should be noted that the Washington Redskins didn’t keep Sean McVay when he was their offensive coordinator and many people in Cleveland don’t want the Browns to make the same mistake with Kitchens.

McCarthy is high on a number of team’s lists and he is expected to interview with the Browns. McCarthy has the best resume of any candidate, as he led the Packers to the playoffs in eight straight seasons and he led Green Bay to a Super Bowl win. It is also worth noting that Dorsey has a previous history with McCarthy.

Other Contenders

The Cleveland Browns have already interviewed interim head coach Gregg Williams for the job and Williams has some things in his favor, as he led the Browns to a winning record when taking over from Hue Jackson, and his defenses are known to be very good year after year.

Brian Flores, the current defensive coordinator for the Patriots is getting a lot of attention from teams, but it is hard to see the Browns going with Flores when they already have Williams.

Nick Sirianni is not a household name, but he is from the area, as he went to the University of Mount Union. Sirianni is the current offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts have done so well this season that another of their coaches, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is on the radar for some teams, including the Browns.

Kevin Stefanski got his name on the radar after taking over as offensive coordinator for the Vikings. Stefanski would be a bit of a reach for the Browns, but Cleveland has been known to do some strange things.

New Orleans assistant head coach Dan Campbell is getting a lot of interest from teams. He did a fine job as an interim head coach with the Dolphins and he could get another chance at a head coaching job.

Adam Gase is the former coach of the Dolphins and it has been said that Peyton Manning told Haslam that the Browns should consider Gase for the head job.

Bruce Arians has already said he has an interest in the Cleveland job. He has also said that he would keep both Kitchens and Williams on as coordinators. Arians has said that the only two open jobs he would consider are those in Cleveland and Tampa.

Jim Caldwell is a former NFL head coach who is interested in getting back in the game. He is the former head man at Detroit and Indianapolis and would bring a lot of experience to the Browns.
