The Cleveland Browns’ bandwagon is getting pretty full ahead of the 2019 campaign. Cleveland has not made it to the postseason since 2002, but the Browns are favorites to win the AFC North after winning five of their last seven games in 2018. This team has the potential to put up a lot of points with Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Jarvis Landry, and Odell Beckham Jr. on the roster,
2019 NFL Season Win Totals
Cleveland Browns
Over 9 Wins -129
Under 9 Wins +106
Given their history since re-entering the NFL two decades ago, it’s pretty wild to see the Browns favored to win 10 games. Cleveland has done that just once in the last 20 years, winning 10 games but missing out on the playoffs in 2007. Incredibly, in their last 20 seasons, the Browns have not finished with a better point differential than +24, but they have finished with a negative point differential of -100 or more nine times.

We’ll get a sense of just how good the Browns are early on. They face both of last year’s Super Bowl teams in the first eight weeks of the season, and they are unlikely to be large favorites in any of those games. The schedule breaks in mid-November though with three straight home games, so if they go .500 or better through the first half of the campaign, that bodes well for the over. Cleveland faces division rivals in four of its last five games, so the AFC North will likely not be decided until late December.

For a team without a first round pick, the Cleveland Browns did an excellent job in the draft. Greedy Williams was considered by many to be a first-round talent, and the selection of Mack Wilson in the fifth round is excellent value. Austin Seibert has a huge leg, and he could be used in some trick plays as he is the most athletic kicker we have seen in quite some time.
Cleveland Browns 2019 Prediction
Provided Baker Mayfield makes the leap that many are expecting in his second season, the Cleveland Browns have a lot of potential. Mayfield showed that he could be a playmaker at the next level as a rookie. He threw for more than 3,700 yards in just 13 starts, and he finished with nearly twice as many touchdowns as interceptions.
Mayfield will have a new weapon in Odell Beckham Jr. too. The Browns dealt a first and a third round pick in order to acquire OBJ from the Giants, and his addition should make the passing game explosive. Jarvis Landry and OBJ should complement each other well, providing Mayfield with some quality options.
The running game seems to be in good hands with Nick Chubb, but Chubb must stay healthy. There is no proven running back behind him with Duke Johnson requesting a trade out of Cleveland, so if Chubb goes down this position could be a mess.
This defense is a concern. There is a lot of talent up front. Former No. 1 pick Myles Garrett has been disruptive, and the addition of Sheldon Richardson and Olivier Vernon in the offseason gives the Browns two other qualify players along the defensive line.
However, the back seven could be a big problem. Denzel Ward showed a lot of potential as a rookie, but there are major question marks everywhere else. If Williams doesn’t emerge as a solid cornerback, this team could give up a lot of yards through the air.
I see why people are excited about Cleveland, but I think the under is the play. The potential for a great season is there, yet the back seven, a lack of depth, and a tricky schedule could undermine the Browns’ chances. We’ve seen the sleeper that everyone loves in the offseason go belly up far too often, and I won’t make that mistake with Cleveland.
