Detroit vs. Green Bay Odds Analysis

Linemakers installed the home based Packers 6-point favorites on the Week 6 lookahead lines. Though the Lions were on bye and the Packers secured a huge outright dog win in Big D against the Cowboys, the betting markets have favored Detroit since the number hit the board. Green Bay is currently down to a 4-point favorite even though 57 percent of the bet count has come in support of Matt LaFleur’s squad winning the game by margin. It looks like public bettors hit the Lions at the open while sharp money accounts got in on Green Bay once the line was reduced. There’s been no lone movement with the total, but a whopping 88 percent of the early bet count expects points to be tough to come by; surprising when considering the rivalry’s recent total trend.

Detroit Lions Odds

Detroit has been one of the bigger surprises of the young season with the franchise now in the second season of the Matt Patricia era. Last we saw Kerryon Johnson and company in live action; they squandered a late-game lead to the Kansas City Chiefs that allowed for Patrick Mahomes and company to escape Motown with the 34-30 triumph. However, the Lions went on to cover the closing 7.5-point NFL odds with ease to move to 2-1-1 ATS overall. The Lions have shown well away from Ford Field in going 1-0-1 SU and a perfect 2-0 versus the linemakers playing to a tie with Arizona and beating Philadelphia outright 27-24 as 4-point pups. Dating back to last season, the Lions check in 3-1-1 SU and a lucrative 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

Green Bay Packers Odds

The Packers took the field with purpose last week in Arlington where they sprung one of the easier final results of the young season. Though Green Bay closed as 3.5-point underdogs, it took it to the Cowboys right out of the chute logging the game’s first touchdown six minutes into the game and then extended the lead to 14-0 at the conclusion of the first quarter. By the time Dallas tallied its first points, the Packers had already lit the scoreboard up for 24 unanswered points and was well on their way towards securing another huge road win after getting the best of the Bears in Chicago the opening week of the season. The book on Rodgers and company has been pretty easy to read through five games. When they win, they cover. When they lose, they don’t.

Last Meeting

With the Packers already bounced from the playoffs and the Lions also eliminated, these clubs had nothing but pride to play for when they hooked up in Week 17 of last season. Stafford went on to light the Packers secondary up for 266 passing yards and a couple of TD passes on 20 of 32 completions, while Zach Zenner rumbled for 93 yards and a TD on 21 carries. The end result was an ugly 31-0 blanking that saw Green Bay put very little fight into it with its head coach already fired and the franchise looking ahead to the following season. The triumph moved Detroit to 3-1 SU and ATS its last four visits to the “Frozen Tundra.” This has been a high scoring rivalry of late with the teams playing to the over in six of the last seven meetings and an average of 49.1 points denting the scoreboard.

Key Trends

As already mentioned, the Lions have owned their recent rivalry with the Packers. None of the four games were really competitive either save for the 31-23 final in the first meeting of last season that saw the Lions get out to a commanding 24-0 lead and hold on for the 8 point final margin of victory as 1-point home chalk. Keep in mind, Aaron Rodgers wasn’t available each of the last two times Green Bay hosted Detroit at Lambeau Field. In his lone appearance against Detroit’s defense last season, he went on to throw for a whopping 442 yards and 3 TD once the Packers were forced to play catchup in the second half. He’s healthy and ready to go now so No. 12 will no doubt be determined to help his squad hold serve in this first skirmish with the Lions.
