Jacksonville Jaguars Odds To Make The Playoffs

Jacksonville Jaguars Odds To Make The Playoffs

The Jacksonville Jaguars flopped in 2018. A year after making it to the AFC Championship game and looking like one of the best teams in the NFL, they followed it up with a poor season. The offense was the culprit, which is why Blake Bortles was jettisoned and Nick Foles was signed in free agency. Jacksonville still has a lot of elite players on defense, so a bounceback season could be on the horizon. The current NFL odds have given the Jaguars a worse than 50-50 chance at making the playoffs, so the team will surprise some people if it can get back to double-digit wins and the postseason.

Jaguars Playoff Odds Analysis

Jacksonville is now the co-favorite to win the AFC South following the surprising retirement of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Indianapolis has dropped and the oddsmakers have made Jacksonville and Houston +200 to win the division. If the Jaguars snag it, they will claim a berth in the playoffs. If not, they will need to try to get in through one of the two AFC wild card berths.

The Jaguars will face off against the Colts, Texans and Tennessee Titans twice apiece this year. They will also face off against the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers, Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons.

Jacksonville Jaguars Odds

The Jaguars finished last season averaging only 15.3 points per game, which was second-worst in the NFL. Bortles regressed after a solid 2017 and the team then decided to make a change. Foles is a former Super Bowl MVP but the Eagles have Carson Wentz so he was deemed expendable. The Jaguars are hoping he can find that magic this season and get the Jacksonville offense back on track. The wideout core is still questionable, and the hope is a combination of Keelan Cole, Dede Westbrook D.J. Chark will help bring some downfield success. Leonard Fournette is the team’s most talented skill player but he has not had the smoothest career in Jacksonville. It is imperative he steps up and dominates.

The Jaguars defense took a step back a season ago but still has all the tools needed to be among the league’s stingiest units. The cornerback duo of Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye is elite, while Myles Jack is a star linebacker. Calais Campbell once again leads the defensive line group, while No. 7 overall pick Josh Allen looked great in the preseason and could be a burgeoning star. The Jaguars defense has playmakers at every level and could make life tough on opponents consistently. However, there are some brash personalities within the group and some early losses could result in some trying times, so it’s important Jacksonville gets off to a hot start.

Key Stats or Trends

The retirement of Luck has given Jacksonville a golden opportunity to win the AFC South this season. The Texans have a better quarterback and seem to be the better team overall, but their schedule is really tough. Foles doesn’t need to be great in order for this team to be successful in 2019, but he does have to prove to be a capable quarterback.

It was surprising to see the Jaguars take such a big step back a year ago, but most of the key pieces are still in place from the playoff team. If the passing game improves, Jacksonville should be back in the postseason hunt, and these are good odds to jump on before the year begins.
