With Patrick Mahomes behind center the Kansas City Chiefs are always a threat to reach and win the Super Bowl. For the second time in four years they enter the season as the defending champions after rallying to beat Philadelphia, 38-35, in Super Bowl LVII. Since Mahomes became the permanent starter in 2018 the Chiefs have won at least 12 regular season games matching the 2020 franchise record of 14 wins last year. KC hosted the last five AFC Championship games and is the Super Bowl favorite on the NFL futures odds board.
The core of the championship club remains intact with Mahomes a special player leading the show. For the second year in a row the Chiefs had subtractions at receiver. Tyreek Hill departed ahead of the 2022 season and Mahomes will be without Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster. But like we witnessed in 2022, Mahomes doesn’t need flashy receivers as long as Travis Kelce is around. Along with San Francisco and Cincinnati the Chiefs have the highest preseason win total on the board at 11.5.

Chiefs Under 11.5 Wins +122
The biggest loss on offense may be that of Eric Bieniemy, who took a gig with the Commanders. There is no loss of continuity, though, with former coordinator and Bears coach Matt Nagy sliding back into the role. The title, however, is in name only since Andy Reid and Mahomes spearhead the offensive play-calling. And it’s hard to argue with the results since the Chiefs were No. 1 in scoring and yards last season and have finished among the top six in each category in each of Mahomes’ five seasons as the starter.
The offense revolves around Mahomes, who led the NFL with 5,250 passing yards and 41 TDs a season ago. And all Mahomes does is win posting a winning percentage of 80 over his 80 career starts. The passing game will continue to thrive with Kelce around. Now in his mid-30s, Kelce had his finest season with 110 receptions, 1,338 yards and 12 TDs. Marquez Valdes-Scantling should have a bigger role after catching 42 passes and averaging 16.4 yards per reception.
KC’s defense ranked 16th in points and 11th in yards allowed in 2023. The group doesn’t have to be great with an offense that averages 30 points, but it does need to produce. With that coordinator Steve Spagnuolo got a pair of new edge rushers to go with Chris Jones likely improving the pass rush. And the young secondary with another year of growth should be better giving the group the potential to rank among the top 10 overall.

With the Chiefs it’s all about them and not the opponent. With Mahomes and Kelce the offense will continue to hum and the defense has the makings to be much improved. It’s almost boring what the Chiefs are able to do in this era of pro football. After glancing at the schedule I don’t see many road blocks and as long as they stay relatively healthy and motivated another season with at least 12 wins can be had.
NFL Odds: Kansas City Chiefs OVER 11.5 Wins
