The kickoff of regular season NFL action on Prime Video on Thursday Night is an excellent matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs. Both teams have high-powered offenses and it could be a shootout on Thursday night. Both teams looked good last week, as the Chargers handled the Raiders, while the Chiefs routed the Cardinals. The Chiefs had dominated this series until recently, as the Chargers have held their own, including winning the last two meetings in Kansas City. If you missed Al Michaels on Sunday night, you’ll get a chance to hear him on Thursday as he is teaming up with Kirk Herbstreit to do the Prime Video broadcasts this season.
On Thursday, September 16, 2022, the Los Angeles Chargers will visit the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video
NFL Week 2 Betting Odds
Los Angeles Chargers +4
Kansas City Chiefs -4
Total 54.5
Odds Analysis
The money on this game has been coming in on the Chiefs, as some places had the odds as low as 2.5 on Kansas City. That number was quickly gobbled up and most places opened the game with the Chiefs at -3.5 That number is also disappearing, as the Chiefs are now a 4-point choice. The total has also seen some action, as it opened as low at 52 in some places and it has been steadily rising, as it is now 54.5.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers looked very impressive in their opener, as they handled the Las Vegas Raiders, winning 24-19. There were no questions about the Los Angeles offense entering this season, as they have an exciting young quarterback in Justin Herbert and some nice weapons around him including running back Austin Ekeler. The Chargers do have some concern about wide receiver Keenan Allen who injured his hamstring against the Raiders.
Los Angeles was even more impressive on defense against the Raiders, as they held Las Vegas to just 19 points. The defensive line of the Chargers is going to cause problems for opposing teams all season and Los Angeles went out and picked up Khalil Mack in the off-season and he provided immediate dividends, as he had three sacks in the opener.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs were thought by some to be weaker this season because they lost Tyreek Hill, but Kansas City looked better than ever in a Week 1 win against the Cardinals.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw the ball all over the field, to multiple receivers in a rout of the Cardinals. It could be that Kansas City’s offense is even better this season, as teams won’t be able to zero in on just once receiver. The question for the Chiefs will be their defense. It was solid for the most part against the Cardinals, but it will get a much stiffer test against the Chargers.
Kansas City will be an interesting team to follow for a number of reasons this season. Because of their offense there will be a lot of games with high totals on them this season. That is the case on Thursday night, as the total on this game is well above 50. There could be some value taking Kansas City games under if the totals start to get too high.
Chargers at Chiefs Free Pick
The Chargers are getting a lot of respect in terms of futures odds, as some people think they are a Super Bowl contender. It is somewhat surprising that the line on this game has moved toward the Chiefs. Kansas City looked great against the Cardinals, but Arizona is poorly coached and has a weak defense. This game will be a much better test to see if the Kansas City offense is unstoppable. The Chargers looked really good on defense against the Raiders and they may be able to slow down Mahomes and company. I’ll take the points with the Chargers on Thursday night.
