The Miami Dolphins have a new coach this year in former Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores, but it is unlikely he finds much success in his debut campaign. The Dolphins lack high-end talent throughout the roster and the current NFL odds have listed them as longshots to make the playoffs in 2019. Miami seems to be in the midst of a rebuild as several of their veterans are reportedly available for trade. It would be a stunner for the Dolphins to be competitive this year.

Dolphins Playoff Odds Analysis
Miami finished 7-9 a year ago but is expected to fall backward from that. The Dolphins do have some winnable games in their division as they face off against the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, but they will also have to deal with the New England Patriots twice in 2019. The non-divisional foes this season are the Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Redskins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals.
The Dolphins will have to pull several upsets to simply flirt with .500 this year, which is why the oddsmakers have made them such longshots to qualify for the postseason.
Miami Dolphins Odds
The Dolphins moved on from longtime quarterback Ryan Tannehill this offseason. They signed veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in free agency and then traded for 2018 top-10 pick Josh Rosen after the Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray. Fitzpatrick seemed to be a shoo-in for the starting job early in the preseason, but Rosen has come on strong, and the Dolphins still haven’t announced their starter for the season. Even if Fitzpatrick takes the reins initially, Rosen has more upside and will likely play the majority of the year. If he doesn’t show enough progress, the Dolphins will likely be in the market for a quarterback in next year’s draft.
The Miami offense lacks dynamic playmakers. Running backs Kenyan Drake and Kalen Ballage as well as wide receiver Kenny Stills are among the biggest names, but there is not a star among the skill group. Laremy Tunsil is a very good left tackle but there are serious questions everywhere else on the line.
The Dolphins defense needs to play well this year. It has some solid pieces, led by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and cornerback Xavien Howard. There are rumors that Miami is trying to trade for Texans star edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, and if that happens, it would be a big boost. The Dolphins will need to play above their talent level to have a shot at the postseason.
Key Stats or Trends
Miami has been stuck in a state of mediocrity for several years, so it was a wise decision to let Tannehill go and try some new options at quarterback. Rosen has potential and will be given a season to prove he is the quarterback of the future. He has not been put in a good situation but will try to overcome it.
The Dolphins don’t have an established quarterback and the players around Rosen and Fitzpatrick are below average, which means it could be a rough season in 2019. A playoff berth would be a stunner as this team has a pretty tough schedule early on and is expected to dig itself into a hole right away.
Flores is a smart defensive mind and it seems like the team will need to win ugly this year. In an NFL that is switching to more passing and higher scores, it’s a tough way to consistently find success, and the Dolphins will find that out in a hurry.
