No team has taken more criticism in the offseason than that of the New York Giants. Dave Gettleman was the butt of numerous jokes after selecting Duke’s Daniel Jones with the sixth pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Many figured the former Duke Blue Devil would be around in the second round! However, the embattled general manager looks to be having the last laugh as good Jones has looked throughout the preseason. That said, the games don’t mean much of anything in exhibition play save for giving players much needed reps and others a chance to make the team. Eli Manning is still likely to be the QB1 once the G-Men lineup against the Cowboys in Week 1. Their odds of going from worst to first in the NFC East ( +2150 ) are much longer than their odds to make the playoffs at top rated sportsbooks. In other words, New York won’t be lacing up its playoff shoes come January!

New York Giants Odds
The Giants enter the 2019-20 regular season 170-1 underdogs to win Super Bowl LIV as well as 80-1 choices to win the NFC. Pat Shurmur’s squad won a total of five games last season en route to bringing up the rear of the NFC East standings. Oddsmakers aren’t expecting a bunch of improvement in the second season of the new regime with the team’s season win total coming in at 6. The betting markets are also selling New York as an improved football team with heavy juice currently supplanted upon the low side of that impost. Only Arizona, Miami and Oakland have longer odds to qualify for the playoffs come 2020! This is a team that shipped its best and most popular player in Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns for what amounted to defensive help in the forms of Jabrill Peppers and Dexter Lawrence. While the move could pay off over time, it’s likely to hamper the offense more than improve the defense this upcoming season.
While I don’t expect the G-Men to be nearly as bad as many figure they’ll be, this isn’t a team you can expect to make any kind of tangible noise in 2019-20. With two games slated to go against the Redskins as well as matchups on the docket against the Buccaneers, Cardinals, Lions and Dolphins, it makes more sense in my opinion to attack the season win total more than anything else. Should they go on to win 4-5 of those games, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that they log at least a pair of wins in divisional play and another against non-conference opposition. While I think this team could ultimately prove to be a pointspread darling, they won’t be pulling off the unfathomable and challenging the Cowboys or Eagles for division supremacy.
In or Out?
If you’ve got money to burn and don’t care about ponying up a bunch of it to win very little, go ahead and hit “No” on the Giants odds to make the playoffs. While I expect the team to be improved on both sides of the ball, there’s still a ton that needs to be rectified within the franchise for it to once again become a Super Bowl let alone playoff contender on the NFL betting lines. This will likely be Eli Manning’s final season running the show in the Big Apple, and who knows; maybe this Jones kid has it in him to allow the team to take that next step – next year!
