Favorite

McCarthy is listed as the favorite at odds of +900 and he could have a lot of value at those odds. The New York Jets have set up an interview with McCarthy and it is said to be his first known interview with any team. McCarthy is known as a coach who does well with quarterbacks and he would be working with Sam Darnold. McCarthy has an excellent resume including a Super Bowl win and he has a track record of playoff success. He was 125-77-2 with the Packers and his Green Bay teams went 10-8 in the playoffs. The Packers made the playoffs eight straight seasons under McCarthy and he led them to a victory in Super Bowl XLV.

Other Contenders

You can almost throw a net over all of the other candidates in terms of their odds. The Jets have already interviewed Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The Chiefs have an exciting offense and Bieniemy is high on the list of many teams looking for a head coach.

LaFleur is the offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans and is a top contender to get one of the NFL coaching vacancies. His name is being prominently mentioned for almost every NFL head coaching vacancy.

Monken is the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and he could have some appeal considering Tampa Bay’s offense was one of the better ones in the NFL this season and first in terms of passing yards per game.

Kingsbury is a bit of a Wild Card, as he led a very potent offense at Texas Tech, but he seems better suited to be an offensive coordinator rather than a head coach. He is now the current offensive coordinator with the USC Trojans.

McDaniels is the current offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. He nearly took the Indianapolis job last season and is still considered a top candidate for a number of openings.

DeFilippo was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He was a hot commodity a couple of months ago, but many people have cooled on him since the Minnesota offense went into the tank the last month of the season.

Arians is out of the NFL right now, as he is a current TV commentator, but he has a great reputation as an offensive mind and he might get back into coaching in the right situation.

Gase was the head coach of the Dolphins last season and somewhat surprisingly, he seems to be high on a number of team’s lists as a head coach for next season.

You may have noticed that I didn’t put Lincoln Riley among the top contenders. Oddsmakers give him a chance at odds of +950 but Riley has already gone out of his way to say he is staying at Oklahoma. He recently agreed to an extension at Oklahoma, so it would be shocking if he ended up taking any NFL opening in the near future.

I also don’t consider Jeremy Bates a serious contender for this job despite the odds. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Jets this season. Players have already come out and said they won’t miss Bates and it is extremely hard to see how New York ownership could sell the players and the fans on Bates as their next head coach.

Don’t sleep on Richard of the Cowboys. He has done a great job as Dallas defensive backs coach and it would not be a surprise to see a team hire him as their next head coach. He could have some value at odds of +2000.
