New York Jets Season Win Total Odds

The injury bug played an enormous role in Gotham throughout Adam Gase’s first go round as the New York Jets head coach. The hope is that a healthier roster paired with reinforcements brought in via the NFL Draft and free agency allows for the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS to make some noise in what’s believed to be an AFC East for the taking now that key cogs of the New England Patriots dynasty no longer make their home in Foxboro. Even after going winless the first month of last season, New York still managed to push against its closing season win total odds by producing a 7-9 overall record. Sam Darnold and company’s number to beat this season remains at seven, but the betting markets look to be selling that impost evidenced by the heavy -140 juice currently attached to the under. I like a number of the moves made this past offseason that made the roster more experienced and younger at the same time. Most believe the division belongs to either the Bills or Pats, but I wouldn’t sell the Jets short if I were you!

Darnold wasn’t able to evolve the way the franchise would’ve liked a season ago due to a bout of mononucleosis picked up early on. Even so, he started just as many games as his rookie campaign and improved upon his stats across the board. He surpassed the 3,000 yard passing plateau, but the TD/INT ratio still leaves much cause for concern. His rookie year saw him churn out a 17:15 tally. His sophomore campaign was better, but nothing awe inspiring 19/13. That said, he didn’t get much support from his pass protectors, 52 sacks allowed, or from the ground game with Le’Veon Bell struggling in his first season with the Jets combining for just 1,250 yards and a total of 4 TD. Darnold also worked with a less than impressive wide receiver corps.

Save for Jamison Crowder who put forth the second best season of his career, he got very limited returns from the remainder of the pass catchers. Upper management completely overhauled the offensive line via free agency as well as the draft by selecting The Ville’s Mekhi Becton with their first round pick. They also plucked Denzel Mims from Baylor in as well in the second round, and followed it up by inking the Bucs former No. 1 pick Breshad Perriman to a one-year contract.

The best news to come out of last season was the turnaround the defense had under new coordinator Gregg Williams. The unit was a stonewall against the run in allowing fewer than 87 yards per game No. 2 and only 3.3 yards per carry No. 2. The turnaround was done without C.J. Mosley in the mix. He’s healthy now and will add another dimension to the stop unit for as long as he can stay on the field. The secondary proved to be the weak link which forced an offseason overhaul. The signing of Pierre Desir and possible addition of Logan Ryan will only make it that much stronger in 2020-21 with Jamal Adams looking to build off his rock-solid sophomore season in which he led the team in tackles 61, sacks 6.5 and passes defensed 7.

New York Jets Schedule Analysis

I fully understand why NFL season win total bettors are hammering the under ultimately forcing linemakers to attach nasty vigorish to that side of the impost. New York’s schedule is freaking brutal! Just take a look at Weeks 1-3; the Bills, 49ers and Colts are all favored to win their respective divisions. The next three games against the Broncos, Cardinals and Chargers won’t be walks in the park either. They then close the regular season rivalry with the Bills at home, travel to KC to take on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, and then host the Patriots for the first of two regular season matchups looking to snap an eight-game losing streak of which they’ve covered the closing NFL odds three times. Bookend matchups surrounding the bye versus the dramatically improved Miami Dolphins are up next, and then they close the season out with home games in two of their last five with two of the three road games taking place on the west coast versus the Seahawks and Rams in successive weeks. Again, brutal! But if the defense can figure out a way to defend the pass and the offense actually finds a way to put points on the board, I believe the talent is on hand to better last season’s mark and produce at the very least a .500 record. It all boils down to Darnold taking that next step and the defense becoming a more well-rounded unit.
