NFL Betting – 2019 Regular Season MVP Odds

NFL Betting – 2019 Regular Season MVP Odds

There are a number of things to consider when taking a futures bet on the regular season NFL MVP. First, the winner has to put up wicked numbers and those are typically amassed by offensive players. In 2018, Patrick Mahomes became the sixth straight quarterback to claim the award, and his numbers were eye-popping. Mahomes was only the second player in NFL history to throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in the same season winning in a landslide.

The QB position is a good place to start when placing a wager on the 2019 NFL regular season MVP at online sportsbooks. Since 1961 the position has won the award an astonishing 39 times. There have been and currently are a number of gifted running backs in the league. However, the last time a ball-carrier won the award was 2012 when Adrian Peterson rushed for over 2,000 yards and fell nine yards short of tying the NFL record for yards in a season. In other words, it would take a worldly effort to wrestle the trophy away from a QB.

Mahomes is in a nice position to have another big season, but it’s doubtful he comes close to his numbers from a season ago. The Chiefs led the league in scoring and total offense with a collection of playmakers to complement their young quarterback. Mahomes is the early favorite at top NFL sportsbooks to win a second MVP with, surprise, quarterbacks taking up the top five spots on the odds list.

Believe it or not we’ve never seen a receiver hoist the MVP award. And there have been some good ones over the years. We do have several pass-catchers on the odds board, albeit much further down. The favorite among the group is Odell Beckham Jr. at +8000. A change of scenery should spark OBJ, as will his new quarterback Baker Mayfield. The issue with receivers is that if they put up large numbers, the guy throwing the football will get most of the credit. Mayfield is among the group of QBs at the top of the odds list at No. 4.

And Mayfield has plenty of value at +1001. Like Mahomes last season, Mayfield enters his second season and has an abundance of playmakers around him. He also has the hype of being a former No. 1 overall draft pick. Mayfield proved he has the goods delivering seven wins after taking over the controls last season. He has a better supporting cast this year which will make for better numbers.

Just putting up big numbers isn’t going to get a player the MVP. His team has to win and getting to the playoffs is a huge consideration. The last six winners advanced their team to the conference championship game with four players reaching the Super Bowl. The NFL has never awarded its MVP to a player from a losing team.

With video game point totals put up over the last several years, it’s getting more difficult for a defensive player to win the award. There are a few good ones on the list who can be bought for a big payout. Aaron Donald of the Rams is widely considered the best defensive player in the game and is currently available at +5000. Only two defensive players have ever claimed the award with Lawrence Taylor the last in 1986.
