There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as catching a touchdown pass, and nobody did it more than Antonio Brown in 2018. AB’s 15 scoring grabs were the most in a season since Dez Bryant snared 16 in 2014. And Brown has been a TD machine with 59 scoring grabs over the last five seasons with no less than nine in a campaign. AB changed teams this summer and will be catching passes from someone other than Ben Roethlisberger for the first time in his career.
Can Brown continue his pace in Oakland? Oddsmakers don’t think so putting him fourth on the odds list at +1150 for most touchdown receptions in the 2019 NFL regular season. The favorite at top online sportsbooks to lead the league is Green Bay’s Davante Adams, who tied for second with 13 TD catches a season ago. With a healthy Aaron Rodgers tossing darts, Adams just might come out on top in this category.

There are a lot of things working in Adams’ favor to lead the NFL in touchdown catches. First, he has Rodgers throwing him the football. Second, he has a knack for finding the endzone. Over the last three seasons he’s posted double-digit scoring grabs in each with 12, 10 and 13. He’s become the top target in the offense and I’m not sure Rodgers has the confidence in guys like Geronimo Allison and Marquez Valdes-Scantling yet.
Brown would garner severe consideration for leading the league since he’s such an exceptional athlete. However, his off-field antics have overshadowed everything. The Raiders are known to acquire misfits and castoffs, but even they have tired of Brown during training camp. He may get his head on straight and have a fine season, but the Steelers certainly came out winners in this deal because they don’t have to deal with the headache. I would fade AB in this wager and look for better value picks.
What are those picks you ask? Well, JuJu Smith-Schuster benefits the most with Brown’s departure. JuJu had seven touchdowns last season and that was with Brown grabbing 15. The offense in Pittsburgh isn’t going to change, and without Brown chemistry is likely to be better. Somebody has to make up for those scores and Smith-Schuster is waiting at a price of +1350.
As prolific as Julio Jones has been he’s reached double-figures in scoring grabs just once in his career, and for the Falcons to have any success that needs to change. That season was in 2012 with Dirk Koetter as offensive coordinator. Koetter is back and will find ways to get Jones more involved. That should happen in the red zone where Atlanta was one of the worst last season. Jones was targeted just 17 times in the red zone and will be a bigger part of the offense inside the 20.
A little further down the odds board at +2000 is Mike Evans, who had a monster year in 2018. Evans had 86 catches for 1,524 yards and eight touchdowns, and he should be even better with more stability in the organization. Jameis Winston has a lot to prove as well in the final year of his rookie contract, so there could be something special brewing in Tampa. The Bucs had the top-ranked pass offense last season and the hiring of Bruce Arians isn’t going to change that. I like Evans to have a big season and he has value at his current price.
