The upcoming NFL season will feature an outstanding lineup of choices for NFL Defensive Player of the Year. With top favorites JJ Watt, Joey Bosa, Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack there is a strong case that can be made for each player. Ultimately what may be the deciding factor in determining the winner are variable intangibles such as team performance and of course good old-fashioned luck at avoiding injuries. For example, Watt has been the victim of two injury plagued campaigns but many think he is poised for a return to dominance.

JJ Watt
Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt makes for an appealing choice to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year. In fact, Watt is certainly no stranger to the award having won it a total of three times, (2012, 2014, 2015). Further adding to his credentials are four career Pro Bowls, four first team All Pro seasons, and having twice lead the NFL in sacks. Many see Watt primed for a major comeback season after playing just three games in 2016 and five games in 2017. Injuries kept him out of the lineup but have also given Watt the chance to build himself back up. JJ Watt was first round pick out of Wisconsin in 2011. He is highly regarded for his charitable works and was named Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2017 in addition to being named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year for 2017 as well.
Joey Bosa
Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa is another potentially strong choice to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year. In just his third pro season he has already established himself as a star in the league. Bosa made his first Pro Bowl last year and was NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016. The 2016 first round draft choice out of Ohio State has 23 sacks and five forced fumbles with 111 total tackles in just two years as a pro.
Aaron Donald
Los Angeles Rams defensive end Aaron Donald is coming off his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl season and has been a First Team All Pro the past three seasons. Additionally, Donald was AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year last year. The first round pick out of Pitt has emerged as one of the most dominant players in the league. Last year Donald posted 41 tackles and 11 sacks while forcing five fumbles.
Khalil Mack
Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack adds to the new optimism about the franchise’s future as Jon Gruden has returned as head coach. Mack has made the Pro Bowl for the past three consecutive seasons and was a First Team All Pro selection in 2015 and 2016. Mack was NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2016 and won the Butkus Award that same season. The first round pick out of the University of Buffalo should anchor the Silver and Black defense for years to come. Last year was another stellar performance for Mack with 78 tackles and 10.5 sacks.
Von Miller
Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller has made the Pro Bowl four years in a row and six times total for his career. Miller is a three-time First Team All Pro and also a three-time Second Team All Pro. He was the 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and the 2012 Butkus Award winner, which he also won in college as a member of Texas A&M in 2010. Miller had a strong season for what was a poor Denver team last year with 57 tackles and 10 sacks.

There is a lot of justifiable optimism about the Raiders as they prepare to move to Las Vegas after this year. Gruden’s return will certainly spark them and that leads into the expectation of a strong season by Khalil Mack.
