For another week the Los Angeles Rams are at the top of the board on the updated odds to win Super Bowl 53. The Rams and New England Patriots have been running neck and neck since before the season opened and once again they are at the top. The Rams had their first test of the season, coming from behind in the fourth quarter on the road without their top two receivers, and if depth was a perceived issue, it didn’t show. The Rams stayed unbeaten with a 33-31 win over the Seahawks. At +250, the Rams saw their odds grow a little bit from the previous week.
The Pats looked more Pats-like in their last two outings and remain a solid second favorite at +650. The Kansas City Chiefs saw their odds improve slightly from last week and they remain the third favorite at +647. KC passed a test last week by knocking off the Jaguars and has received plenty of support thanks to a sparkling 5-0 record. A big matchup takes place on Sunday Night Football when the Chiefs visit the Pats in an AFC battle. The Jags are fading after losses in two of their last three games and the Saints have moved up the board thanks to another decisive win on Monday night.

The Chiefs and Rams are the NFL’s only unbeaten teams after five weeks and they are among the top three on the odds board. Facing adversity for the first time this year, the Rams responded like a championship team in defeating the Seahawks for their fifth straight win. The Rams trailed by a touchdown entering the fourth quarter and were without receivers Brandin Cooks and Cooper Kupp, who exited with head injuries. No worries, they still have Todd Gurley, Jared Goff and the league’s best offensive line. After surrendering 31 points in the first three quarters, the Rams defense pitched a fourth quarter shutout and the team responded with a touchdown and field goal to win in a place that’s hard to win in.
One thing holding the Chiefs back earlier in the year was their defense. But after a stifling performance against the Jags, KC looks like it could be a top contender for its first Super Bowl since before the merger. We know what the Chiefs can do offensively and Patrick Mahomes is legit. But the league’s worst defense came up with a gem against the Jags, forcing five turnovers and putting Jacksonville away by halftime. We said last week that the Rams and Chiefs could be had for a better price later in the season. However, that may not be case the way they’re playing.
We’ll see if the Pats are back to form this week when they host the Chiefs in a mammoth game on Sunday. It’s still early and a loss isn’t going to hurt either team. But the victor will send a clear message to the league. The Saints were a sexy Super Bowl pick at the beginning of the season but lost some of their support after getting blown out by Tampa in the opener. Backers have returned following four consecutive victories moving the Saints to +800.
There is one common thread among the Saints, Chiefs and Rams and that’s offense. They rank first through third respectively in the NFL in scoring while the Pats are floundering at ninth. If you still believe that defense wins championships there are teams available at a good price. The Ravens lead the league in scoring defense and can be had at +2858. The Bears are second in points allowed per game and are available at +2808.
