The 1972 Dolphins popped the champagne bottles on Sunday when the Los Angeles Rams became the last unbeaten team to lose a game. Faced with a situation new to them this year, the Rams will play trying to avoid a losing streak for the first time. Two weeks ago Aaron Rodgers faced the biggest spread of his career when the Packers were 8.5-point dogs in L.A. This week, Russell Wilson is facing the largest underdog spread of his career with Seattle getting 10-points on the opening NFL betting line. Rodgers and the Packers covered the line, but they didn’t get a chance at the upset when a fumbled kickoff late in the fourth quarter denied Rodgers the chance for another comeback. Wilson is hoping his team is at least within striking distance late in the game.
The Seahawks have returned to a power running game that was a big part of their success during back-to-back Super Bowl appearances and one world championship. Marshawn Lynch was the bruising back in those days and Pete Carroll has relied on more of a running back by committee approach this season. But it’s worked. The Seahawks ran for 154 yards last week against the Chargers and have the third-best ground game in the NFL with over 137 yards per outing.
And having success on the ground is a necessity if Seattle wants to pull off the upset. That could be more difficult with leading rusher Chris Carson nursing a hip injury. That will, however, lead to more opportunities for Mike Davis, who ran for 62 yards on 15 carries against the Bolts. When Carson was inactive for Seattle’s Week 4 tilt with Arizona, Davis stepped in and ran for 101 yards on 21 carries with a pair of touchdowns. The teams met in Week 5 with the Rams twice overcoming a second-half touchdown deficit to claim the 33-31 victory. And it was the offensive firepower that did the damage. With Jared Goff throwing for 321 yards and Todd Gurley rushing for 77 yards and three scores, the Rams pushed back in a hostile environment.
And now that the pressure of an undefeated season is out of the way, the Rams are ready to return to their winning ways. Facing a double-digit deficit for the second game in a row, the Rams were unable to get out of the hole they dug themselves on Sunday. But they sure made it interesting. Down 35-14 late in the first half, the Rams showed off their potent offense by scoring 21 straight points over the next 21 minutes to tie the game. However, they failed to pick up a first down on their final two possessions while the Saints scored 10 points for the victory.
Gurley had a season-low 13 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown while the Rams threw the ball a lot in their comeback attempt. That won’t be the case this week against Seattle’s 21st ranked run defense.
