Last week was a big one for many of the quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. But perhaps the biggest news was made from a first round draft pick of the 2019 NFL Draft. There is no doubt that Dwayne Haskins will go down as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL History. Perhaps Haskins was destined to serve as the karma that Washington owner Dan Snyder richly deserves. Haskins didn’t last two seasons in Washington before being fired for misconduct. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked him up with nothing to lose and the need to think about a future without Ben Roethlisberger. Haskins was the star in Pittsburgh’s win at Philadelphia last week.
Week 2 NFL Preseason Schedule and TV Coverage (All Times Eastern)
Thursday, August 19
New England Patriots at Philadelphia Eagles, 7:30 p.m. NFLN
New England opened as a 1.5-point favorite with a total of 38.5.
Bill Belichick got strong performances from rookie quarterback Mac Jones, rookie kicker Quinn Nordin, and rookie running back Rhamondre Stevenson last week in a win over Washington. Jones passed his first test as a pro quarterback and didn’t make any bad mistakes. Nordin kicked field goals of 35, 50, and 40 yards. While Stevenson won the game with a 91-yard touchdown run with 1:04 left to play.
Philadelphia flopped in their opener last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And new starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was not impressive at all.
The public will flock to the Patriots, which means Philadelphia could bring value.
Friday, August 20
Cincinnati Bengals at Washington, 8 p.m. NFLN
Washington opened as a 4.5-point chalk with a total of 34.5.
Kansas City Chiefs at Arizona Cardinals, 8 p.m. ESPN
Kansas City opened as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 41. Both the Chiefs and Cardinals scored late wins last week as they protected their starting quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes threw two passes for Kansas City. At the same time, Arizona’s Kyler Murray took the night off in week one.
Saturday, August 21
Buffalo Bills at Chicago Bears, 1 p.m. NFLN
Chicago opened as a 4.5-point favorite with a total of 38.5.
Chicago head coach Matt Nagy is hanging by a thread and among the favorites to be fired first in 2021. Nagy’s get-out-of-jail card is rookie first round pick Justin Fields, who impressed last week throwing for 14-20, 142 yards, and one touchdown pass.
New York Jets at Green Bay Packers, 4:25 p.m. NFLN
New York opened as a 1.5-point favorite with a total of 34.
Jordan Love threw for 12-17, 122 yards, and one touchdown for the Packers in a 26-7 loss last week to Houston as Aaron Rodgers took the game off.
Atlanta Falcons at Miami Dolphins, 7 p.m.
Miami opened as a 5-point chalk with a total of 37.
Baltimore Ravens at Carolina Panthers, 7 p.m.
Baltimore opened as a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 35.
Detroit Lions at Pittsburgh Steelers, 7:30 p.m. NFLN
Pittsburgh opened as a 6.5-point chalk with a total of 37.5.
Dwayne Haskins’ performance drew much attention last week, and gamblers will flock to the Steelers this week. But Detroit is coming off a close-call loss to Buffalo. The Lions make for a potentially strong contrarian bet this week against the masses.
Tennessee Titans at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 7:30 p.m.
Tampa Bay opened as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 37.
Houston Texans at Dallas Cowboys, 8 p.m.
Dallas opened as a 4-point favorite with a total of 37.5.
Indianapolis Colts at Minnesota Vikings, 8 p.m.
Minnesota opened as a 2.5-point favorite with a total of 37.5.
Las Vegas Raiders at Los Angeles Rams, 10 p.m. NFLN
Las Vegas opened as a 7-point favorite with a total of 35.
The Raiders impressed gamblers last week in a 20-7 win over the Seahawks while the Rams lost to the Chargers 13-6. But this is a big preseason number on Las Vegas.
Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks, 10 p.m.
Denver opened as a 6-point favorite with a total of 37.
Sunday, August 22
New York Giants at Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m. NFLN
Cleveland opened as a 6.5-point favorite with a total of 35.5.
San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers 7:30 p.m. NFLN
San Francisco opened as a 4.5-favorite with a total of 35.5.
Monday, August 23
Jacksonville Jaguars at New Orleans Saints 8 p.m. ESPN
New Orleans opened as a 4-point favorite with a total of 38.5.
It was a rough opener for Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer last week in a 23-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns. But his prize draft pick Trevor Lawrence showed reasonably well.
