The 2023 NFL Draft is right around the corner so I thought now would be a good time to put the current Super Bowl LVIII odds under the microscope and discuss some of the bigger market moves made during the first few months of the offseason. As it stands right now, the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs are the odds-on favorites to repeat and I can’t argue with that as great a job Andy Reid and the gang did to win it all last season. Unsurprisingly, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers odds to win it all tumbled with Tom Brady no longer a member of the franchise. I had to do a double take when seeing what the New York Jets are currently offering up – more on that below!
Now this is just my first impression of what’s gone down in the NFL futures market since odds hit the board immediately following the conclusion of LVII that the Chiefs got handed over to them on a silver platter. In depth analysis won’t be made here. We don’t even know how or if each respective team dramatically improved themselves in the NFL Draft. This is more or less just a hot take piece to give my readers a better idea of where my train of thought is as we patiently approach Week 1 – enjoy!

Buffalo Bills +755
After watching Buffalo trip and stumble all over itself in the regular season and then get flat-out dominated by the Bengals in the Division Round, I have absolutely zero inclination of getting involved with Josh Allen and Co. in the futures market throughout 2023-24. Until that defense proves to me it can stay healthy and Stefon Diggs figures out a way to not disappear in the biggest of games, this team won’t be getting any of my money! It has however received some from the NFL betting market with the Bills 9-1 opener down to +755.
Cincinnati Bengals +913
Zac Taylor’s troops hit the board 21-1 underdogs to get back to the Super Bowl and win it a season ago. Though its playoff trek ultimately ended in the AFC title game in the same venue it came out victorious in the year prior, Cincy proved it’s a team with staying power that NFL bettors still might not have seen the best of just yet. Now in what will be his fourth season running the show in the ‘Natti, I’m expecting big things from Joe Burrow and Co. Should the secondary be retooled and improved, there isn’t much stopping me from going all-in on this squad! I’ll take better than 9-1 right now if that’s what those booking the bets are ponying up.
Miami Dolphins +1642
Believe you me when I tell you I pulled like crazy for the Fins to make some noise last season in Mike McDaniel’s first full season holding the head coaching reins. While dramatic improvement was made, the team still spit the bit when it mattered most in the playoffs. It took some amazingly poor play from the Bills to make that Wild Card matchup a game. The bottom line here is that I don’t trust Tua Tagovailoa to partake in all 17 regular season games or be healthy enough to play once the second season arrives. I’m not sold on any of the backups either. As such, I’m sitting here scratching my head as to why Miami’s odds to win LVIII have cratered in dropping half the value offered up at the open.
Detroit Lions +2235
Every Tom, Dick, and Harry seems to want a piece of the Lions right now with Dan Campbell’s squad getting all sorts of offseason love from futures odds bettors at the online sportsbook. While the addition of David Montgomery helped bolster the backfield, it wasn’t the offensive side of the ball that needed to be improved this offseason. The Emmanuel Moseley signing was nice, but that secondary needs much more than him to improve upon last year’s ghastly outputs (No. 32 overall). We’ll check back in on the Lions once the Draft comes to a conclusion. Hopefully more weapons are picked up to bolster this young up-and-coming roster!
Cleveland Browns +3733
Now this is a line move I can get on board with. I get that Deshaun Watson was dreadful in his return under center at the tail end of last season, but I knew that would be a train wreck going in and faded the Browns with success. But 2023-24 brings with it a blank slate and the Browns for my money still possess one of the best rosters in the NFL. I think the offense is going to be electric with the trio of Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, and Elijah Moore offering up the alpha, deep threat, and possession pass catcher every offense needs to flourish – and don’t forget about David Njoku. All that capped off by Nick Chubb who’s been a top-3 rusher each of the last two seasons – yeah, sign me up! Look out if upper management brings in run stoppers to fill out the defense!
