It’s safe to say having a decent quarterback is a main reason why teams reach the playoffs. With Tom Brady the Bucs reached the dance all three years winning a Super Bowl. With Brady retired, at least for now, the Bucs have the third longest odds of making the playoffs and that’s in a division that failed to produce a team with a winning record last season. The Arizona Cardinals have the longest odds at +950. There is no timetable for the return of Kyler Murray and the team lost most of its talent while breaking in a new coach.
Last season’s Super Bowl combatants are among the teams with the highest odds of making the playoffs. The Kansas City Chiefs reached the postseason in each of the last eight seasons winning two Super Bowls and playing in a third. They’ve won at least 12 games in every season Patrick Mahomes was the starter. We know injuries are a part of the game and one key player going down can change the outcome. With Brady retired Baker Mayfield is the likely candidate to take over the starting role. This is one area where the Bucs may regret not taking more action during the offseason. Mayfield did take the Browns to the postseason a few years ago and resurrected his career during a stint with the Rams last season, so there’s hope the former No. 1 overall pick still has something left. And plenty of talent remains on both sides of the ball to make the Bucs at least a threat in a division that failed to produce a winning team. Of all the teams with odds this high to make the playoffs I think the Bucs have a legitimate chance.
San Francisco 49ers

Talking about the importance of QBs is one reason why I’m not so high on the Niners. The savior for them is that they have outstanding talent at just about every other position and the NFC West is likely going to be one of the weakest divisions in the NFL.
That’s why oddsmakers have made them the most likely team to reach the postseason. However, there’s a chance the rest of the division rallies and outside NFC West games the Niners have a first place schedule. There isn’t a lot of value in backing the Niners to make the playoffs and they’ll probably make it by winning the division. It makes more sense to wager on the team’s regular season win total.
Detroit Lions

I like what the Lions are doing and I think Dan Campbell is an underrated coach. The club bought into him last year rallying in the second half of the season to win eight of their final 10 games to finish with a winning record while remaining in the playoff hunt to the final weekend. Shrewd trades and wise draft picks have fans in Detroit in a frenzy over the prospects for the upcoming season. I don’t see the Vikings winning 13 game and the Packers are without Aaron Rodgers for the first time in years. Chicago is also rebuilding leaving the division wide open and the Lions are about to ascend to new heights.
