While the dogs were barking last week, they were howling in Week 11 of the NFL regular season. Teams getting points covered the closing line in six of the 12 games with three contests pushing the line through the Sunday night encounter. The favored teams still hit it big on the money line, though, winning eight games straight up. For the second straight week the Jacksonville Jaguars pushed the closing line while dropping their sixth in a row straight up.
The New York Giants won their second straight game and appeared to have the 3-point spread covered while building a 31-14 fourth quarter lead over the Bucs. The G-Men allowed three touchdowns in the final 9:47 and held on for the 38-35 win. We also had a push in the Thursday night game with Seattle winning 27-24 as a 3-point chalk. The over/under split in 14 games last week and it happened again in Week 11 with six wins on each in the 12 games.

Biggest Week 11 Upsets
The AFC West and NFC South were responsible for the four upset losses this week. The Raiders were the NFL’s punching bag through the first 10 weeks of the season and it looked like they already had their sights on Vegas. But something happened on their way to the first overall pick in next spring’s draft – they showed some competitive fire and dropped the Arizona Cardinals in the desert on a late field goal, winning outright as a 4.5-point pup. The loss sure doesn’t give Cards fans much hope.
And just when you thought the Chargers were ready to contend with the Chiefs, Pats and Steelers in the AFC, they let one slip away to the struggling Broncos, saving Vance Joseph’s job for at least another week. The Bolts saw their six-game winning streak come to an end and they were 4-1 against the line in their previous five games until losing outright as a 7.5-point favorite.
And that brings us to the NFC South where the fork was firmly planted in the Atlanta Falcons. Their offense failed to deliver again, scoring one touchdown and 19 points in the loss to Dallas. That came a week after they scored 16 points while losing in Cleveland. Now at 4-6 in a cramped playoff race, it’s safe to assume the Falcons are done.
With the Saints playing as well as any team has ever played, the Carolina Panthers are relegated to fighting for a wild card spot. They hung with New Orleans as long as they could, and they still have two games remaining with the division leaders, but the fighting Newtons blew a game they probably should have won. Of course you can’t go into any game thinking that because this is the NFL, but given the current rosters, the Panthers would beat Detroit nine times out of 10. Sunday just happened to be that one outlier.
Newton had a good line with 357 yards and three touchdowns on 25 of 37 passing, but he will lament the throw that got away. His scoring pass set up the Panthers for the potential game-winning 2-point conversion in the final 67 seconds. Newton had time to survey the field before launching an errant pass, sealing the team’s second straight loss.
Biggest Week 11 Spreads
For just the second week there was no closing line that reached double-figures as the matchups were all a little closer. The biggest spread was a touchdown and extra point in two affairs. One we touched on above with the Chargers falling to the Broncos. The other was an absolute beatdown in the Big Easy with the Saints flexing their muscles against the defending champions.
The Rams look good. The Chiefs look good. But oh my, the Saints look great after their demolition of the Eagles. I thought the Eagles would come out with some fight after a loss to Dallas the previous week put a crimp in their title defense plans. Now the Eagles might be done, too. The Saints were a 7-point favorite and they easily won their ninth game in a row while posting their eighth consecutive win ATS.
Starting his first game in place of the injured Joe Flacco, Lamar Jackson did enough to get the Ravens a victory, ending their three-game slide while getting back to .500. The line was off the board for most of the week until surfacing Saturday morning and closing at Baltimore -6.5. The Ravens won the game but failed to cover.
