If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. We refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. We went 2-2 with the picks in Week 10 and that takes the season record to 24-21-1. We have four plays to look at for this week. Let’s take a look at the Week 11 Ugly Dog picks.
Week 11 Ugly Dog Picks
Jacksonville Jaguars +10 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
I know that the Jaguars are one of the worst teams in the NFL, but Jacksonville has actually been good to us the past couple of weeks. They covered against Houston and they nearly won outright against Green Bay last week. This time around the Jaguars get the unbeaten Steelers. Jacksonville is still playing hard but this game really comes down to whether or not Pittsburgh takes the game seriously. Head coach Mike Tomlin has already gotten ahead of the issue saying that he has a lot of respect for Jacksonville and that his team will be ready. Whether that is true or not is the question, as the Steelers have notoriously been a team that plays down to their level of competition. We’ll hope that is the case again this week as we take the Jaguars plus the points as an ugly dog.
Dallas Cowboys +7.5 at Minnesota Vikings
There is not much to like about the Cowboys right now and the public just saw the Vikings beat the Bears so you know the public is going to be backing Minnesota on Sunday. The Cowboys have just two wins this season but in the rotten NFC East they are just a game and a half out of first place. The Cowboys are expected to get Andy Dalton back at quarterback this week so his return should give Dallas a boost. Whether it will be enough is the question, as the Cowboys will be facing a Minnesota team that has won three straight games and is back in playoff contention. We’ll go against the public and take the Cowboys plus the points as an ugly dog.
Denver Broncos +3.5 vs. Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins have played really well lately and the public has noticed, as Miami is starting to become a public team. The Dolphins have won five in a row and they are a real threat to win the AFC East. Miami is getting some respect this week as they are laying more than a touchdown on the road at Denver. The Broncos haven’t been anything special this season and there are serious questions about their head coach, but Denver is at home and Miami will be playing in potentially bad weather. The Broncos are still not a team that inspires much confidence and it is hard to go against the red-hot Dolphins. Regardless, we’ll take the Broncos as an ugly dog.
New York Jets +8.5 at Los Angeles Chargers
The Jets have been a regular in this column all season and for the most part they have been a disaster. New York did finally cover a game, as they lost to New England by just three points and then the Jets had their bye. The Jets were hoping that Sam Darnold would be ready for this game against the Chargers but he has already been ruled out. That means the Jets will have to rely on Joe Flacco to win a game. Flacco is no longer a good quarterback, but he can occasionally make a few plays. The Chargers are the hard luck team of the NFL. They have won just two games this season but it seems they suffer a close defeat every week. We’ll be hoping for another close game this week as we take the Jets as an ugly dog.
