We’ve seen just slight movement on the NFL lines for several games in the early part of the Week 12 betting week. Oddsmakers have been dialed in for the past few weekends and the teams are falling into their respective places as we come up on the three-quarter mark of the regular season. Only two games have seen more than a 1-point shift in the line, one being the Miami at Indianapolis encounter, which shifted 2.5-points in favor of the Fins.
We also witnessed a 2-point move for the Thanksgiving Day matchup between NFC East rivals Dallas and Washington. And surprisingly that move went in favor of the Skins, who are not only playing on the road this week but they’ll be doing so without Alex Smith, who was put on the shelf last week with a broken leg. Sharps are hitting the Eagles in their NFC East matchup with the Giants, not buying the recent offensive resurgence by the G-Men that’s boosted them to a pair of wins in a row. And the line for the Tennessee-Houston Monday night game hit the board late over concerns about the availability of Marcus Mariota.
Let’s take a more in depth look at a few Week 12 games that have seen some shifting in the line since the numbers hit the board.
Week 12 Major Line Moves
Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys
Opening Line: Cowboys -9
Current Line: Cowboys -7
The NFC East is as chaotic as the line for the Turkey day showdown between the Skins and Boys. With Dallas riding a two-game winning streak that got them within a game of the division lead, and the Redskins pushing forward without their starting quarterback, one might assume the Boys would be a big favorite on the line. And Dallas opened as 9-point chalk. A majority of the betting public gobbled up the points sending the spread tumbling a couple of points to its current number.
Dallas looked to be dead in the water after losing to Tennessee at home a few weeks ago, a potentially demoralizing loss with two difficult road games on tap after that. But the Boys rebounded by winning in Philadelphia and Atlanta and now find themselves just one game off the lead with a chance to tie the Skins at the top. The addition of Amari Cooper was supposed to open up the offense, but he has just 14 catches for 169 yards in his three games. The beneficiary has been Ezekiel Elliott, who raced for 122 yards last week and has 273 yards in the last two games. When Zeke is running free, the Boys are winning games.
Miami Dolphins at Indianapolis Colts
Opening Line: Colts -10
Current Line: Colts -7.5
News of Ryan Tannehill returning to the starting lineup for the Dolphins was a relief to many Fins fans, sending the spread tumbling in their favor. Miami opened as a 10-point dog for this game and the visitors had huge disadvantage at the quarterback spot with Brock Osweiler penciled in. Tannehill has progressed well enough from his shoulder injury that forced him out of the previous five games and will take over the reins on Sunday. “I’m not quite 100 percent, but I feel confident and have made all the throws that I’m going to need to make over the course of the game,” Tannehill said earlier this week.
The Dolphins haven’t scored an offensive touchdown over the last two games, but managed to win one of them to remain in the playoff hunt. Osweiler threw for 352 yards without a touchdown and one interception over the past two games and was 2-3 during his relief stint. Miami is hoping Tannehill can reenergize the offense, and over 55 percent of the betting public thinks he can also.
New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles
Opening Line: Eagles -4.5
Current Line: Eagles -5.5
The defending champs were pancaked in New Orleans last week, but they haven’t lost the backing of their faithful. This is a must-win game for Philly after dropping two in a row out of their bye, the last a 48-7 drubbing in the Big Easy. The good news is that the Eagles play in a division where a .500 record might just win it. The bad news is that they are 2-games under the break-even point.
They can make up some ground against the Giants at home this week, and sharps are counting on it. The spread climbed by a point in favor of the Eagles even though the visitors are getting 55 percent of the action through the middle of the week. New York has a glimmer of hope as well after winning two straight while scoring a total of 65 points in those games. Philly might be confident heading in, but their secondary is battered and it will be tough for them to win this one.
