The Week 13 Thursday night game set the tone for the entire slate of games that had the dogs barking. Heading into Dallas as a 7-point favorite for the opening game of the betting week, the Saints were upset 13-10. The Chargers ended the weekend with a dramatic comeback win in Pittsburgh on Sunday night as a field-goal pup, giving the underdogs a 7-8 straight up and 9-6 against the spread record ahead of the Monday night affair. The biggest shocker came in Green Bay with the Packers falling to the Cards, 20-17, as a 13.5-point favorite on the closing line. The outcome cost Mike McCarthy his job as he was fired shortly after the game.
It was also another good week for under bettors with 10 of the 15 games playing below the closing total. That’s the most since Week 7 when we also saw 10 games cash the under. The highest closing total on the board for the weekend was 54 in the Rams-Lions game and the teams came in below that number. Six game on the Week 13 schedule closed with a total at 50 or higher and the under was 4-2 in those matchups.

Biggest Week 13 Upsets
Those fans crying for the ouster of McCarthy got their wish. However, it took one of the most embarrassing losses in recent Packers history to get it. Dating back to 1996, the Packers had been favored by at least 13 points for a home game 15 times and had never lost straight up until Sunday. Falling, 20-17, to the Cardinals, who had just two wins coming, as a 13.5-point favorite was the final straw as McCarthy was let go immediately following the game.
There are no more excuses for Aaron Rodgers, now. Whatever kind of friction there was between the coach and quarterback is done. But it doesn’t matter, because so is the Packers season. Joe Philbin steps in to pick up the pieces of what has become a disaster in Green Bay.
It was a particularly tough week for road favorites as they lost four of seven games straight up. The Saints were laying a touchdown to the Cowboys and were stymied in their 13-10 loss. New Orleans came in as the second-highest scoring team in the league but left as the third following their lowest scoring game in three years. The defeat may actually be a good thing for the Saints, who were carrying the burden of a 10-game winning streak. And as we all know, winning that many games is tough to do and the odds of losing become greater. So it’s better to lose now than next month.
The Colts also had their lengthy win streak come to an end in Jacksonville. Winning five straight put Indy in the thick of the AFC playoff race, but that ended abruptly at the hands of the Jags, who pitched the shutout. Andrew Luck was on fire entering the game with three or more scoring passes in eight straight games, but the Colts failed to sniff the end zone, failing on three fourth-down plays while in field goal range.
Chicago and Carolina both entered their matchups as 3.5-point favorites and were upset. The Bears tried to sneak by with backup Chase Daniel again, but were denied in overtime by the Giants. The Panthers suffered their fourth straight loss, the last three as the favored team, making the playoff picture in the NFC real interesting.
Biggest Week 13 Spreads
For the second week in a row we had four games that closed with a spread of at least 10-points and three of the favorites were able to win straight up while going just 1-3 ATS. Kansas City faced the biggest line of the week at 14-points for their game with AFC West rival Oakland. Patrick Mahomes tossed four more scoring passes and KC led by 17 heading into the fourth, only to be outscored 17-7 in the final frame and escape with the 7-point victory.
Tennessee needed a late comeback to overcome the Jets and covering the 10-point spread was the furthest thing on their minds. Needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Titans trailed 16-0 before rallying for the 26-22 win on Marcus Mariota’s touchdown pass with less than a minute remaining. The Rams were the only double-digit favorite to win ATS, downing the Lions 30-16 as 10-point chalk. After giving up an average of over 42 points per game in their previous three outings, the Rams got a much-needed defensive effort that included a pair of sacks form Aaron Donald and the return of Aqib Talib.
