We’ve seen the typical ½- to 1-point moves on the early NFL betting lines posted at BookMaker.eu, but there are a few curious shifts that have caught our attention. Fresh off a win over the Broncos, San Francisco is getting a lot of attention on the early line for its game against Seattle. The spread was wagered down despite the Niners’ 43-16 loss to the Seahawks just a few weeks ago. We’ve also seen movement back and forth on the line for the Sunday matchup between Philadelphia and the Rams, due in part to developments regarding Carson Wentz.
Outside of those games the action has been fairly predictable for the Week 15 slate of games. We had 10 matchups over the last three weeks that closed with a double-digit total and only one is currently on the board. The Rams have climbed to a 10.5-point favorite over the Eagles and if the line holds it would be the fourth game this season they gave at least 10-points. The Rams are 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS in the previous three games.
Let’s take a more in depth look at a few Week 15 games that have seen some shifting in the line since the numbers hit the board.
Week 15 Major Line Moves
Detroit Lions at Buffalo Bills
Opening Line: Pick ‘em
Current Line: Bills -2.5
The Bills are getting plenty of love from the public for their home tilt against Detroit with over three-quarters of the early action backing Josh Allen’s club. That moved the line from an opening toss-up to the Bills -2.5. Buffalo has at least been competitive lately, losing their last two games by a combined eight points and posting a pair of wins before that. The Bills have the No. 1 ranked defense in the NFL and the Lions suck offensively, so that likely has something to do with where the line is going. Still, the Bills aren’t very good and the spread is a concern.
Playing as a favorite for the first time this season in last week’s matchup with the Jets, Buffalo struggled to move the football when Allen wasn’t running. And the defense was gouged by an offense that’s on par with that of the Lions. The result was another close loss, but the Bills are giving fans hope that things should be better. They already are.
Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers
Opening Line: Seahawks -6.5
Current Line: Seahawks -4
This line is puzzling. Seattle opened at -6.5 and I guess that was too good for a lot of people to pass on. The Niners were played hard early and the number decreased to its current -4 with San Fran getting over 60 percent of the action. Apparently that win over the Broncos was enough to bring joy to the team’s faithful. Still, the Niners might want to think about their future and that includes losing a few games to help their draft position. Not that they are going to tank a game, but I’m just sayin.
Thanks to comments made by former Seahawk Richard Sherman, Seattle has some locker room fodder to use as motivation, not that beating the Niners and qualifying for the playoffs at the same time isn’t enough. Seattle looked really good in shutting down Minnesota last week and they hammered the Niners two weeks ago, which makes me think this line could go up prior to kickoff.
Philadelphia Eagles at Los Angeles Rams
Opening Line: Rams -9.5
Current Line: Rams -10.5
The spread for this game has been as chaotic as Philly’s season. The line opened at Rams -9.5 and dropped a half-point before news surfaced that Wentz may not play. In an instant the line jumped to LA -11. The backup situation in Philadelphia isn’t as dire as it is in other places. Nick Foles would get the nod and we know what he did last season. Circumstances are a bit different for Foles, however. Last year the Eagles had a playoff spot clinched when he took over, now he’s trying to keep the defending champs’ hopes alive.
This is an important game for the Rams, who struggled in the last two outings scoring a combined 36 points. And they were held without a touchdown in their loss to the Bears last week. Jared Goff regressed to his rookie season form by throwing four picks and Todd Gurley had season-lows in rush attempts and yards. Facing an Eagles defense that surrendered over 550 yards to the Cowboys last week could get the Rams back on track. There was some buyback on the Eagles that saw the spread drop a half-point to its current number of Rams -10.5.
