Some of the best bets in the NFL each week are oftentimes wagers on teams that are considered the worst in the league. If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. We refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. We are coming off a 2-1 week with the three plays for last week. Let’s look at the Week 16 Ugly Dog picks.
NFL Week 16 Ugly Dog Picks
Let me point out one fact that you are probably already aware of. When you bet these games, you are usually better off waiting until Sunday morning to make your wagers because you will probably get a better number than what I list from earlier in the week.

Carolina Panthers +10.5 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
There are not many bettors who want anything to do with the Carolina Panthers with Cam Newton at quarterback. Newton continues to play poorly and he is only a threat when running the ball. The Bucs were awful last week in a shutout loss to New Orleans and Tampa Bay is dealing with a number of injuries. Bettors don’t think it is going to matter, as the Bucs are double-digit road favorites. Carolina has not shown much recently but if they were ever going to play hard it should be this week at home against the defending Super Bowl champs. It is hard to go with the Panthers, but we take them plus the points as an ugly dog this week against the Bucs.
New York Giants +10 at Philadelphia Eagles
The Giants have shut down quarterback Daniel Jones for the rest of the season so that means it will be either Mike Glennon under center in this game against the Eagles or Jake Fromm. There is very little to like about Glennon so the Giants may be better off giving Fromm a chance. Regardless, New York is not a good team and they will be playing a Philadelphia team that is fighting for a playoff spot. The good news for New York is that they have had some success against the Eagles in the past, including a win earlier this season. This one is still ugly, but we take the Giants plus the big points as an ugly dog.
Houston Texans +10.5 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
The Texans are coming off a rare win, but how much credit they get for beating a bad Jacksonville team is up for debate. Also, the win didn’t actually help the Texans, as it hurt them, as they fell in the NFL draft order. The Texans figure to have trouble in this game against a potent Los Angeles Chargers offense. The Texans have shown a little bit on offense and there is no question that the Chargers seem to find ways to mess things up. The Texans are at home and Los Angeles has not been a trustworthy team this season. We’ll take the Texans plus the points as an ugly dog.
Detroit Lions +4.5 at Atlanta Falcons
The Lions no longer have the worst record in the league, as they are coming off a win against Arizona. The Lions have actually been a good team against the spread this season and now they are getting points against an Atlanta team that is realistically out of playoff contention. The Lions did put Jared Goff on the COVID list so it will be important to see if he is cleared before Sunday. The Lions still have just two wins on the season so they qualify as an ugly dog, and we’ll take them plus the points in this game against Atlanta.
Chicago Bears +7 at Seattle Seahawks
The Bears were about as ugly as a team could get last week in a loss to Minnesota. Chicago made so many mistakes that it is hard to count them all. Neither of these teams looks very good and the Seahawks have not played well at home this season. We’ll take the Bears plus the points as an ugly dog.
