If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. I refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. I went 2-2 with the four picks in Week 1, but that is no reason to complain, as we still really don’t know which teams are going to be really bad yet. Let’s take a look at the Week 2 Ugly Dog picks.
Week 2 Ugly Dog Picks
Carolina Panthers +9 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Panthers are going to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this season, but at least in Week 1 they showed some fight. They couldn’t stop the Raiders, but at least they were able to score. The Bucs were thought to be one of the top teams in the NFC entering this season but in Week 1 they played poorly and Tom Brady looked like an aging quarterback. The whole world is going to be on the Bucs to bounce back this week against a bad Carolina team. This is the type of ugly dog play we are used to. We’ll take the Panthers plus the points as an ugly dog.
New York Jets +7 vs. San Francisco 49ers
I think you can make a case that right now the Jets are the worst team in the NFL. We definitely know they are the worst coached team in the league. Adam Gase has been overrated as a coach for years and the Jets have no hope of being a winning team with him at the helm. At the beginning of the season I thought the Jaguars and Redskins would be the worst two teams, but now I think the Jets have overtaken them. It is worth noting, however, that everyone overreacts to Week 1 results, myself included. The 49ers did not look good in their Week 1 loss to Arizona and now they are laying a TD at home. This game looks a lot like the previous one, as the public expects the 49ers to bounce back. We’ll take the Jets as an ugly dog.
Detroit Lions +6 at Green Bay Packers
The Lions found a way to give away another game last week in a loss to the Bears. If the Jets are not the worst coached team then it very well could be the Lions. Matt Patricia has no business coaching an NFL team. I am a bit surprised the line on this game isn’t higher, as Green Bay was very impressive last week. We’ll take the Lions as an ugly dog.
New York Giants +5.5 at Chicago Bears
The Giants did not look good on Monday night in a loss to the Steelers and now they have to play on short rest in Chicago. The Bears are nothing special, but the Giants are already being put into the category of one of the worst teams in the league. We routinely bet on bad teams in this column, so we’ll take the Giants as an ugly dog.
Jacksonville Jaguars +9 at Tennessee Titans
I don’t want to overreact to Week 1, so I am keeping the Jaguars in the category of an ugly dog. They surprised a lot of people last week in the win over the Colts, but the Colts are overrated. This will be a much better indication of where Jacksonville is at. I expect the Jaguars to have a lot of trouble in this game, but these picks go against the grain and many times they feel ugly. That is the case with this one as we take the Jaguars plus the points as an ugly dog.
Washington Redskins +6.5 at Arizona Cardinals
This game is the same as the last one, as the Redskins were thought to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. They found a way to win last week, due in large part to the ineptitude of the overrated Eagles. This will be a good test for Washington as they take on an improved Arizona team. I still think the Redskins are a bad team and they fit into the ugly dog category, so we’ll take them in this one plus the points.
